Problem Description

Your Schlage Connect Z-Wave lock will not pair with your smart home hub like SmartThings, Hubitat, or Home Assistant. The hub searches for devices but never finds the lock. You have tried multiple times but pairing always fails. The lock worked with a previous hub but will not join your new one.

Symptoms

  • Hub cannot find lock during pairing
  • Pairing starts but fails before completing
  • Lock paired to old hub and will not join new one
  • Z-Wave exclude does not work
  • Lock appears but shows as unknown device
  • Pairing worked but lock not controllable

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Lock still paired to previous Z-Wave network
  • Hub too far from lock for pairing signal
  • Z-Wave frequency mismatch between regions
  • Lock not in inclusion mode correctly
  • Hub Z-Wave radio needs reset
  • S2 security negotiation failing

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Z-Wave locks handle encryption. Pairing without S2 reduces security. Use S2 for permanent installation when possible.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Exclude From Previous Network

Z-Wave devices can only belong to one network. If your lock was paired before it must be excluded first. Put your old hub in exclusion mode or if unavailable use your new hub exclusion mode. On the lock press Schlage button then enter programming code then press 0. This removes it from any network.

2

Move Hub Close During Pairing

Z-Wave pairing uses low power signals for security. Your hub may need to be within 3 feet of the lock during pairing. Temporarily move a battery powered hub or use a long ethernet cable for wired hubs. After pairing succeeds move hub back to normal location.

Verify Z-Wave Frequency

Z-Wave uses different frequencies in different regions. US uses 908.42MHz. EU uses 868.42MHz. A lock bought in Europe will not pair with a US hub. Check your lock and hub documentation to ensure frequency compatibility.

4

Enter Inclusion Mode Correctly

Put your hub in inclusion or pairing mode first. Then on the lock press the Schlage button. Enter your programming code. Press 0. The lock should beep and the Schlage button will flash. If the lock does not respond verify your programming code is correct.

5

Try Without S2 Security

S2 is enhanced Z-Wave security but can cause pairing failures with some hubs. If pairing fails repeatedly check if your hub allows pairing without S2 or with S0 security. Some hubs have an option for legacy or non-secure pairing for troubleshooting.

Quick Solutions

Exclude lock from previous Z-Wave network first
Bring hub closer to lock during pairing
Verify lock and hub use same Z-Wave frequency
Enter inclusion mode correctly on lock
Reset hub Z-Wave radio if issues persist
Try pairing without S2 security if failing

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If pairing fails after multiple attempts, the device may still be registered to a previous account — factory-reset it before trying to add it to a new one.

Pro Tip

After pairing Z-Wave devices build a mesh network. Add wired Z-Wave devices between hub and lock to strengthen signal for daily use.

Real-World Insight

Pairing failures almost always come down to distance during the initial handshake — manufacturers seriously understate how close you actually need to be.

  • Hub too far from lock for pairing signal
  • Z-Wave frequency mismatch between regions
