Problem Description

Your Wyze Lock is not locking or unlocking properly — the motor strains, the lock jams, or it reverses direction mid-lock. Check the battery level first — the lock uses 4xAA batteries inside the interior cover. Low batteries cause the motor to lack torque. Also check deadbolt alignment — if the bolt doesn't align with the door frame strike plate, the motor stalls trying to force it.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

When the Wyze Lock won't operate, it's the usual quartet: door misalignment binding the bolt, lost calibration, low batteries, or a strike plate the bolt can't seat into. The lock only motorizes your existing deadbolt, so a deadbolt that's hard to turn by hand will defeat it.

Start by testing the deadbolt manually for smooth travel and fixing the strike alignment if it catches, then replace the batteries and recalibrate. Get the mechanics right first — no amount of app tinkering fixes a bolt that physically binds.

Symptoms

  • Lock jams mid-operation
  • Deadbolt doesn't fully extend
  • Grinding or clicking sounds
  • Auto-lock not working
  • Shows locked but door opens

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Door misalignment
  • Lock needs calibration
  • Low batteries
  • Strike plate not aligned
  • Deadbolt obstruction

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Wyze Lock requires the Wyze Lock Gateway for remote access. Without it, you'll only have Bluetooth control.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the battery level

Open the Wyze app and check the lock battery percentage. Both the Wyze Lock and Lock Bolt use four AA batteries. Below 20%, the motor may not have enough power to drive the deadbolt fully. Replace all four batteries with fresh alkaline batteries. After replacing, test the lock by sending a lock command from the app. The motor should engage and the deadbolt should extend fully. If the motor whirs but the bolt does not move, the issue is mechanical, not electrical.

2

Recalibrate the lock

If the motor runs but the deadbolt does not fully extend or retract, the lock needs recalibration. In the Wyze app, go to the lock settings and tap Calibrate or Auto-Calibrate. Follow the on-screen steps: the app asks you to manually turn the thumb turn to the fully locked position, then to the fully unlocked position. This teaches the lock the exact rotation range. If the bolt is mechanically stiff, the motor may stall mid-cycle — fix the alignment before recalibrating.

3

Check door alignment and strike plate

If the deadbolt binds or grinds when extending, the bolt is not aligned with the strike plate hole in the door frame. Open the door and test the bolt — it should extend and retract smoothly with no resistance. Close the door and test again. If it binds only when the door is closed, the bolt is hitting the edge of the strike plate. Adjust the strike plate position by loosening its screws and shifting it, or file the opening slightly to give the bolt more room. A misaligned bolt also causes the motor to draw excessive current, which drains batteries quickly.

4

Check Bluetooth and app connectivity

If the lock does not respond to commands at all, check the connection. For the original Wyze Lock with a gateway, the lock communicates via Bluetooth to the gateway, then WiFi to the cloud. If the gateway is offline, remote commands fail — check the gateway LED. For the Lock Bolt, all app control is Bluetooth-only, so you must be within 30 feet. If the app shows the lock but commands time out, close and reopen the app, then try again. Also check if the lock firmware needs an update.

5

Manual operation if the lock is completely unresponsive

If the lock will not respond to any electronic input, use the physical thumb turn on the interior side to lock and unlock manually. If the thumb turn also feels stuck, the internal gear mechanism may be jammed. Remove the interior lock assembly (2-4 screws) and check for debris. On the Wyze Lock Bolt, there is no backup key — the thumb turn and emergency battery contacts on the exterior (USB-C port) are the only backup. Connect a USB-C cable with power to the emergency port while entering your code to unlock.

Quick Solutions

Calibrate the lock
Adjust door alignment
Replace batteries
Realign strike plate
Lubricate deadbolt

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

After any door adjustments (weather stripping, hinges), recalibrate your Wyze Lock.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
