Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Microphone physically muted via switch on device
- WiFi connection lost or degraded on speaker
- Google account sign-in expired or changed
- Voice Match not recognizing your voice pattern
- Speaker firmware needs update for bug fixes
- Background noise interfering with microphone pickup
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Factory resetting a Nest speaker erases all personalized settings including Voice Match and linked smart home devices. You will need to set up the speaker completely from scratch in the Google Home app.
Step-by-Step Solution
Check Physical Microphone Switch
The Nest Audio has a microphone mute switch on the back and the Nest Mini has one on the side. When muted the speaker cannot hear voice commands. On the Nest Mini you will see orange LED lights when muted. On the Nest Audio there is a small indicator near the mute switch. Toggle the switch to unmute and wait a few seconds. The speaker will confirm that the microphone is back on with a tone or LED response.
Restart the Speaker
Unplug the Nest speaker power cable from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds then plug it back in. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the speaker to fully boot and reconnect to WiFi. After booting try saying Hey Google what time is it as a simple test. A restart clears temporary software glitches that can cause the voice recognition system to stop processing commands even when the microphone is working normally.
Verify WiFi Connection
Open the Google Home app and select the speaker. Check the device information for WiFi signal strength and connection status. If the speaker is offline or has weak signal it cannot process voice commands because speech recognition happens in the cloud. Move the speaker closer to your router or add a WiFi mesh node to improve signal. The speaker needs a stable internet connection to understand and respond to any voice command.
Retrain Voice Match
If the speaker hears you but does not respond to your specific voice your Voice Match profile may need retraining. Open the Google Home app go to Settings then Google Assistant then Voice Match. Select Retrain voice and follow the prompts to say Hey Google and OK Google several times. This updates the voice recognition model to better match your current voice. Each household member should have their own Voice Match profile.
Check for Software Updates
Google Nest speakers update automatically but sometimes updates fail or are delayed. Open the Google Home app select the speaker then tap the gear icon for settings. Look for system firmware information and check if an update is available. If the speaker is on a very old firmware version it may have known bugs affecting voice recognition. Keeping the speaker connected to WiFi overnight ensures it can download and install updates automatically.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If voice commands stopped working after relinking the account, check that the skill or action is still enabled — relinking sometimes disables it silently.
Place Nest speakers at least 3 feet away from TVs stereos and windows. Background noise from these sources makes it harder for the microphone array to isolate and recognize your voice commands.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
