- R wire not connected
- Blown HVAC fuse
- Transformer failure
Problem Description
Nest error E194 means the R wire (power wire) is not being detected. The thermostat cannot get the 24V power it needs from your HVAC system to operate.
Symptoms
- Nest shows E194 error
- R wire not detected message
- Thermostat not powering on
- Screen blank or dim
- Battery draining quickly
- Intermittent power issues
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- R wire not connected
- Blown HVAC fuse
- Transformer failure
- Loose wire connection
- Wire damaged in wall
- Power switch off on furnace
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
If fuse keeps blowing, there is a short circuit somewhere. Do not keep replacing fuses without finding the cause.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check HVAC Power
Verify furnace power switch is ON and circuit breaker is not tripped. Check if furnace control board lights are on indicating power.
Check R Wire at Nest
Remove Nest from base. Verify R wire (usually red) is firmly seated in Rh or Rc terminal. Wire should show about 1/2 inch of copper inserted fully.
Check HVAC Fuse
At furnace, locate 3-5 amp fuse on control board. A blown fuse cuts power to R wire. Replace with identical amperage fuse if blown.

$143.93Check R Wire at Furnace
At furnace control board, verify R wire from thermostat connects to R terminal securely. Loose connection here causes E194.
Test Transformer Voltage
With power on, use multimeter to test voltage across R and C terminals at furnace. Should read 24-28 VAC. No voltage means bad transformer.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
E194 and E2/E3 errors are related. E194 is a general R wire issue while E2/E3 specify Rc or Rh specifically.
Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.
