Problem Description

Your Nest thermostat displays a No Power to Rh Wire error, the screen goes blank, or the battery drains rapidly requiring frequent recharging. The Rh wire carries 24V AC from the HVAC transformer and is the primary power source for the Nest. When this power supply is interrupted — by a blown furnace fuse, a safety switch, or a broken wire — the Nest runs from battery until it shuts down completely.

Symptoms

  • Nest screen blank or low battery warning
  • No power to Rh wire error in app
  • Thermostat charges briefly then dies
  • HVAC not turning on at all
  • Nest in boot loop
  • Battery below 3.6V in technical info

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • HVAC 3A fuse blown at furnace board
  • C wire not connected causing power drain
  • Wire loose in Nest base
  • HVAC transformer failed
  • Furnace door safety switch open
  • Wire damaged inside wall

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Turn off HVAC breaker before touching wires. Shorting R and C wires blows the furnace fuse instantly.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

USB Charge the Nest

Remove display from base and USB charge for 30 minutes. Check Technical Info then Power. Voc should read 24V or higher. If 0 there is no HVAC power reaching thermostat.

2

Check HVAC Fuse

At furnace find control board and locate 3 amp fuse. If metal strip broken replace with same 3A fuse. If new fuse blows immediately there is a wiring short needing professional repair.

3

Check Furnace Door

Safety switch on access panel cuts all power if door not fully closed. Push firmly until it clicks. Simplest cause and often missed.

4

Verify Wire Connections

Turn off HVAC breaker. Pull Nest off base. Check Rh wire is fully inserted and tab pressed down. Strip back extra quarter inch if copper looks short.

5

Add C Wire

Without C wire Nest charges by pulsing HVAC circuit which can fail. Add C wire from spare thermostat cable wire or install Nest Power Connector kit.

Quick Solutions

Replace HVAC 3A fuse
Reseat wires in Nest base
Add C wire or power connector
Close furnace door fully
Test transformer voltage
USB charge to escape boot loop

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

Check Vin and Voc in Technical Info. Vin under 20V means transformer too weak. Replace with 24V 40VA transformer. **Product Intelligence:** - C-wire required for most models - 2.4GHz WiFi only - Nest Aware subscription for history

Real-World Insight

Thermostat issues that keep returning are often caused by stale backup-battery memory holding old settings across power cycles without the user realising.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • HVAC 3A fuse blown at furnace board
  • C wire not connected causing power drain
  • Wire loose in Nest base
  • HVAC transformer failed
  • Furnace door safety switch open
