Overview

Drilling into mortar can damage older joints and invite water intrusion. This guide installs the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) on brick by anchoring into existing holes, using brick mounting blocks, and keeping the cable run sealed.

What's Included

  • Existing brick surface at doorbell location
  • Previous doorbell hole ready to reuse
  • Transformer rated 16-24VAC 10VA or higher
  • Brick is structurally sound
  • Cable access behind brick available
  • Home has 2.4GHz WiFi at door

Got your materials ready? Here's what to check first.

Before You Start

  • Drilling fresh holes weakens old mortar
  • Anchors sized wrong for brick density
  • Cable path pinched at brick edge
  • Mortar pattern hides existing hole
  • Over-tightening cracks brick face
  • Rainwater follows cable into wall

Don't skip this step — it breaks everything if you do

Warning

Do not over-drive masonry anchors. Overdriving cracks brick face and compromises the seal created by the mounting block.

Installation Steps

1

Identify Cable Entry and Holes

Locate existing doorbell wires and the hole where they enter the wall. Inspect mortar joints for any old screw holes. Mark these locations. Your goal is to keep all fasteners in existing holes or a mounting block rather than drilling fresh brick or mortar.

2

Verify Transformer Rating

Power down the doorbell circuit and confirm the transformer outputs 16-24VAC 10VA or higher. Nest Doorbell wired requires sufficient power to run dual infrared LEDs and camera continuously. Upgrade the transformer before mounting if it is under-spec.

3

Install Brick Mounting Block

Attach a brick mounting block using masonry anchors that sit in existing holes whenever possible. The block distributes fastener load and allows flush doorbell mounting. It also creates a sealed chamber behind the doorbell to protect the cable joint from driven rain.

Seal and Pair

Run a bead of exterior-grade silicone caulk where the mounting block meets brick to shed water. Restore power, open Google Home, and add the doorbell to your 2.4GHz WiFi. Test the chime and live view. Monitor for any moisture after the first rain.

Installation Tips

Reuse existing doorbell holes
Use brick mounting block to spread load
Route cable through original entry
Seal around cable with exterior caulk
Check transformer rating first
Plan WiFi coverage before install

Still stuck? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Pro Tip

Keep used brick mounting blocks from previous installs. They can often be reused on siblings or extra side-door setups later.
