- Transformer voltage too low
- Wiring issue
- High activity draining battery
Problem Description
Your Google Nest Doorbell won't charge or power on. If wired, check your doorbell transformer voltage — the Nest Doorbell requires 16-24V AC from the transformer. An underpowered transformer (under 16V) can't charge the battery. If battery-only, connect the USB-C cable on the back of the doorbell to charge. This guide covers checking voltage and charging methods.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
A Nest Doorbell that will not charge or power on is usually a transformer below 16VAC, a wiring fault, or heavy activity draining faster than it charges. In real homes an old undersized doorbell transformer is the cause. Measure the transformer voltage, check the wiring, and charge a battery model indoors to rule out the door wiring.
Symptoms
- Battery not charging even when wired
- Low battery warnings despite wiring
- Doorbell won't turn on
- Charges slowly or not at all
- Battery drains faster than charges
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Transformer voltage too low
- Wiring issue
- High activity draining battery
- Extreme temperatures
- Incompatible existing chime
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Upgrading your transformer to 24VAC 40VA provides the best charging performance and supports mechanical chimes.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check your transformer voltage
The Nest Doorbell wired models require 16-24V AC at a minimum of 10VA from your doorbell transformer. Many older homes have 8V or 10V transformers that do not provide enough power. Check your transformer — it is usually located near the electrical panel, in a closet, or in the basement. The voltage and VA rating are printed on the transformer. If it is under 16V or under 10VA, replace it with a 16V 30VA transformer for reliable power.
Fix the battery model not charging from wiring
The Nest Doorbell Battery can connect to existing doorbell wiring for trickle charging, but it only charges to about 80% this way. If it is not charging at all from the wiring, check that the wires are making solid contact with the doorbell terminals. Clean any corrosion from the wire ends. Test the voltage at the doorbell wires with a multimeter — you need at least 16V AC. If the voltage is present but the doorbell is not charging, the chime connector may not be installed correctly.

$19.99Address overheating during charging
The Nest Doorbell may stop charging if it overheats — common on south-facing or west-facing installations that get direct afternoon sun. The doorbell pauses charging above a certain temperature to protect the battery. If this happens frequently, consider adding a small shade or awning above the doorbell, or use a recessed mount that keeps the doorbell slightly shaded. Charging resumes automatically once the temperature drops.
Fix USB-C charging problems
If the doorbell does not charge via the USB-C cable, try a different cable and power adapter. The included cable is short — use a USB-C cable rated for at least 2A if you need a longer one. Make sure the USB-C port on the doorbell is clean and free of debris. If the doorbell shows no signs of charging (no LED activity), leave it connected for 30 minutes — a deeply discharged battery may take time before the LED indicators activate.
Check for firmware-related power issues
Some firmware versions have had bugs that cause excessive battery drain or charging failures. Open the Google Home app, select the doorbell, and check Settings > Device information for the firmware version. Updates install automatically, but if the doorbell is frequently offline due to dead battery, it may miss updates. Charge the doorbell fully, connect it to WiFi, and leave it powered on overnight to make sure it downloads the latest firmware.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.
Wired Nest Doorbells still have batteries - the wiring trickle charges them. Don't expect instant 100% charge.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
