- Chime connector not installed at the indoor chime box
- Mechanical chime type not compatible with Nest doorbell
- Transformer too weak to power both doorbell and chime
Problem Description
Your Nest Doorbell Wired is installed and the camera works but pressing the doorbell button does not ring the indoor mechanical chime. You get phone notifications but the physical chime box inside your home stays silent.
Symptoms
- Pressing doorbell button sends app notification but no chime
- Indoor mechanical chime box stays completely silent
- Chime worked with old doorbell but not with Nest
- Chime makes a brief click but does not fully ring
- Chime works intermittently ringing sometimes but not others
- Video and motion detection work perfectly only chime fails
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Chime connector not installed at the indoor chime box
- Mechanical chime type not compatible with Nest doorbell
- Transformer too weak to power both doorbell and chime
- Chime type setting in Google Home app set incorrectly
- Loose wiring at chime box terminals after installation
- Chime connector installed on wrong terminals inside box
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Turn off the breaker powering the doorbell transformer before working on chime box wiring. Even though it is low voltage the 24VAC can deliver a sharp shock and damage the chime connector if shorted.

Step-by-Step Solution
Install the Chime Connector
The Nest Doorbell Wired requires a chime connector installed at your indoor chime box. Open the chime cover. Identify the TRANS and FRONT terminals. Connect the included chime connector wires to these two terminals alongside the existing wires. The connector regulates power to allow both the doorbell and chime to function. Without it the chime will not ring.
Set Chime Type in Google Home App
Open Google Home and tap your Nest Doorbell. Go to Settings then Chime Type. Select Mechanical if you have a traditional ding-dong chime or Electronic if you have a digital chime. If set to None the doorbell will not attempt to ring any physical chime. After changing the setting press the doorbell button to test. The correct setting is critical for proper chime operation.
Check Transformer Power
The Nest Doorbell Wired plus a mechanical chime requires a 16 to 24 VAC transformer rated at minimum 30VA. Many older homes have 10VA or 16VA transformers that cannot power both devices. Locate your transformer usually near the furnace or in a utility closet and check the label. If below 30VA upgrade to a 24VAC 40VA transformer.
Verify Chime Connector Wiring
Open the chime box and verify the chime connector is on the TRANS and FRONT terminals not the TRANS and REAR. The labeling varies by chime manufacturer so consult the Nest installation guide for your specific chime model. If wires are loose retighten the terminal screws. Each wire should be firmly held with no bare copper exposed outside the terminal.
Test with Nest Speaker Alternative
If your mechanical chime is incompatible use a Google Nest speaker or Nest Hub as a wireless chime. In Google Home go to doorbell settings and enable Visitor Announcements on your Nest speakers. When someone presses the doorbell all linked speakers will play a chime sound. This bypasses mechanical chime compatibility issues entirely.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Take a photo of your existing chime box wiring before installing the chime connector. This gives you a reference to restore the original wiring if you ever remove the Nest Doorbell.
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
