- WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
- Device firmware or app needs updating
- Device not properly set up during initial pairing
Problem Description
Your Ring Video Doorbell is experiencing issues related to doorbell night vision problems. This affects your ability to control the Video Doorbell through the Ring app, scheduled automations, and voice assistants. Specifically, the issue involves doorbell night vision problems. The steps below walk you through diagnosing the root cause and applying proven fixes so your Video Doorbell works reliably again.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Night vision problems on Ring doorbells split into two categories: IR night vision showing a completely dark image, or color night vision producing washed-out or overexposed footage. For IR issues, look for a white glow or haze on the video — this usually means the doorbell lens is reflecting its own IR light off a nearby surface like a wall, window frame, or the mounting bracket itself. Moving the doorbell even two inches away from the reflective surface fixes it. For color night vision, the built-in spotlight needs a clear path — if the porch ceiling is too low and reflects the light back, you get a blown-out white image.
Symptoms
- Device shows as offline in the app
- Device does not respond to commands
- App cannot connect to device
- Features not working as expected
- Device disconnects frequently
- Automations fail to trigger
- Voice commands not recognized
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
- Device firmware or app needs updating
- Device not properly set up during initial pairing
- Power supply issue or loose connection
- Account not linked correctly
- Too many devices causing network congestion
- Interference from other wireless devices
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Never look directly at active IR LEDs.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check night vision settings
In the Ring app, go to the doorbell Device Settings, then Video Settings. Verify Night Vision is set to Auto (switches between day and color/IR automatically) or On. If set to Off, the camera produces a very dark or black image at night. Auto is the best option for most users — it lets the camera decide when to switch based on ambient light levels.
Clean the camera lens and IR LEDs
The infrared LEDs surround the camera lens. Dust, cobwebs, water spots, and fingerprints on the lens or IR LED window significantly degrade night vision quality. The image appears washed out, hazy, or unevenly lit. Clean the entire front face of the doorbell with a soft dry cloth. Spider webs are a very known problem — spiders build webs over the warm IR LEDs, creating bright white streaks in the image.
Fix washed out or white-glare night vision
If the night vision image is washed out with a white haze, a nearby surface is reflecting the IR light back into the lens. Common culprits: the wall or door frame directly next to the doorbell, a rain cover or overhang above, or the doorbell being recessed into a housing. Adjust the doorbell angle so the IR light points away from nearby reflective surfaces. Some users add a small IR light shield made from black tape.
Try color night vision if available
Some newer Ring doorbells (Doorbell Pro 2, Doorbell 4) support color night vision using a built-in LED light. When enabled, the doorbell uses visible white light to illuminate the scene in color instead of IR grayscale. This provides better detail for identifying visitors but is visible to the person at the door. Enable it in Video Settings if your model supports it.
Address dark spots or uneven illumination
If parts of the night vision image are bright while other areas are dark, the IR LEDs may not cover the full field of view evenly. This is normal at the edges of the frame. For important areas that fall in dark zones, add external lighting — a small LED porch light dramatically improves both IR and color night vision quality. The IR LEDs have an effective range of about 15-20 feet; anything beyond that will appear dark.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Set up motion scheduling or snooze alerts during times when regular activity is expected like when kids come home from school. Use pre-recorded quick replies so the doorbell can respond to visitors automatically when you cannot answer.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
