Problem Description
Your Ring doorbell misses people walking to your door. Packages arrive with no notification. It detects cars and trees but misses people. Ring PIR sensors detect side-to-side movement best. Someone walking directly toward the camera creates minimal lateral movement.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
This is the package theft scenario that makes people furious. The delivery driver walks up, drops the package, and walks away — and Ring recorded nothing. The PIR sensor on Ring doorbells has a maximum range of about 30 feet, but that drops to 15 feet in cold weather because the thermal contrast between a person and the cold background is smaller. In summer heat, the opposite happens — the ambient temperature is close to body temperature and the sensor cannot distinguish a person from a sun-heated wall. Set People Only mode and max sensitivity in hot or cold months. If your walkway is longer than 20 feet, you may need a separate Ring Stick Up Cam covering the approach.
