Problem Description

Your Ring doorbell misses people walking to your door. Packages arrive with no notification. It detects cars and trees but misses people. Ring PIR sensors detect side-to-side movement best. Someone walking directly toward the camera creates minimal lateral movement.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

This is the package theft scenario that makes people furious. The delivery driver walks up, drops the package, and walks away — and Ring recorded nothing. The PIR sensor on Ring doorbells has a maximum range of about 30 feet, but that drops to 15 feet in cold weather because the thermal contrast between a person and the cold background is smaller. In summer heat, the opposite happens — the ambient temperature is close to body temperature and the sensor cannot distinguish a person from a sun-heated wall. Set People Only mode and max sensitivity in hot or cold months. If your walkway is longer than 20 feet, you may need a separate Ring Stick Up Cam covering the approach.

Symptoms

  • Misses people walking straight to door
  • Alerts for cars but not people on walkway
  • Package delivered with no notification
  • Person must press button to trigger alert
  • Works for people walking past but not approaching
  • Clip starts too late person already at door

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • PIR detects lateral motion better than head-on
  • Motion zones excluding walkway
  • Sensitivity too low
  • People Only mode too conservative
  • Mounted too high
  • Smart Alerts frequency limiting notifications

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Maximum sensitivity increases battery drain significantly on battery models. Consider wired power via Ring plug-in adapter.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Fix Motion Zones

In Ring app go to Motion Settings then Zones. Draw zones covering entire walkway from sidewalk to door. Many users only zone near the door missing the approach path.

2

Increase Sensitivity

Slide motion sensitivity to maximum. Default medium misses slower people especially in cold weather. More false alerts but people are never missed.

3

Use Wedge Kit

Ring wedge mount angles doorbell 15 degrees toward walkway. This creates apparent lateral movement as people approach making PIR detection much more reliable.

4

Try All Motion Mode

Switch from People Only to All Motion. The AI filter is conservative and sometimes filters real people at distance or in low light.

5

Check Height

Ring recommends 48 inches from ground. Mounted at 6 feet the PIR cone aims above approaching people. Use wedge kit to tilt downward if you cannot remount lower.

Quick Solutions

Extend motion zones to full approach path
Increase sensitivity to maximum
Use wedge kit to angle toward walkway
Switch to All Motion mode
Lower mounting height
Set Smart Alerts to frequent

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.

Pro Tip

Do a walk test after adjustments. Approach from sidewalk at normal pace. Check for alert before reaching door. Test 3 times.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • PIR detects lateral motion better than head-on
  • Motion zones excluding walkway
  • Sensitivity too low
  • People Only mode too conservative
  • Mounted too high
