Problem Description

Your Ring doorbell is not recording video events. Ring requires an active Ring Protect subscription plan for cloud video recording. Without a plan, the doorbell provides live view only — no recorded clips. This guide covers checking your subscription status, enabling recording, and verifying motion detection settings.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Ring doorbells require an active Ring Protect subscription to record and save video events. Without it, you get live view only — no recordings, no event history, no sharing. People sign up for the free trial, it expires, and suddenly the doorbell stops recording. Check your Ring app > Settings > Ring Protect Plan and make sure your subscription is active. If it is active and still not recording, check that Motion Recording is enabled under Device Settings > Motion Settings. The third culprit is a full shared user setup where the shared user does not have recording permissions.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check your Ring Protect subscription

Recording requires an active Ring Protect plan. Without a subscription, Ring doorbells show live view and send motion notifications but do not save video recordings. In the Ring app, go to Account, then Subscriptions, and verify your plan is active. Check that the specific doorbell is covered by the plan — some plans cover one device and others cover all devices.

2

Verify the system is in the correct mode

Ring modes (Home, Away, Disarmed) control which devices record. If the mode is set to Disarmed, no recording occurs. If set to Home and the doorbell is configured to not record in Home mode, events are missed. Check the mode at the top of the Ring app and verify the doorbell recording settings for each mode under Mode Settings.

3

Check motion detection settings

If motion detection is disabled or sensitivity is too low, the doorbell does not trigger recordings. Go to Motion Settings and verify detection is enabled, sensitivity is at a reasonable level, and at least one motion zone is active. Also check People Only Mode — if enabled, it filters non-person events, which may exclude events you expected to be recorded.

Check WiFi bandwidth for recording

Recording requires the doorbell to upload video to Ring cloud servers. If WiFi signal is weak, the doorbell may detect motion and send a notification but fail to upload the recording. Check Device Health for RSSI signal strength. Below -65 dBm is marginal. Below -70 dBm frequently causes upload failures. Improve WiFi signal to the doorbell with a closer router, WiFi extender, or Ring Chime Pro.

5

Check for Ring service issues

If the doorbell was recording previously and suddenly stopped, Ring cloud services may have an issue. Check downdetector.com and the Ring Community forums for outage reports. Also check that your Ring app and doorbell firmware are up to date — outdated firmware has occasionally caused recording failures that were fixed in subsequent updates.

Quick Solutions

Check doorbell wiring voltage or recharge battery
Add WiFi extender near front door
Power cycle the doorbell for 30 seconds
Configure motion zones to reduce false alerts
Verify cloud subscription is active for recording
Update doorbell firmware to latest version

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

Camera issues that start suddenly almost always trace back to an upload bandwidth drop — run a speed test before assuming hardware failure.

Pro Tip

Ring Protect Basic covers one device. Plus covers unlimited devices at your location.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
