Problem Description

Your Ring doorbell Pre-Roll feature is not capturing the 4-second video preview before motion events. Pre-Roll requires a wired power connection and is only available on specific Ring doorbell models (Video Doorbell Pro, Pro 2, and wired models). Battery-powered doorbells don't support Pre-Roll. This guide covers checking model support and power requirements.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Pre-Roll captures 4 seconds of video before a motion event triggers, using a low-power black-and-white snapshot mode. It is only available on Ring Doorbell 4, Ring Doorbell Pro 2, and Ring Battery Doorbell Plus — older models do not have the hardware. Even on supported models, Pre-Roll requires Ring Protect and a strong WiFi signal. If your doorbell's RSSI is worse than -55, Pre-Roll gets disabled automatically because the doorbell cannot maintain the constant low-bandwidth upload needed for the snapshot buffer. Improving WiFi signal is usually the fix.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Hardwired installation involves working with electrical wiring. Turn off the breaker before touching any wires. If you are not comfortable with basic wiring hire a licensed electrician. Some older homes may need a transformer upgrade from 10V to the 16-24V required by modern video doorbells.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check if your doorbell supports Pre-Roll

Pre-Roll video captures 4 seconds of black-and-white video before the motion event starts, so you see what triggered the event. This feature is only available on certain Ring models: Doorbell Pro, Doorbell Pro 2, Doorbell 3 Plus, Doorbell 4, and Doorbell Wired. Older models (Doorbell 1, Doorbell 2) do not have Pre-Roll hardware. Check your model in the Ring app under Device Health.

2

Verify the doorbell is hardwired

Pre-Roll requires the doorbell to be hardwired (connected to doorbell wiring, not running on battery alone). Pre-Roll continuously buffers a low-resolution video stream, which requires constant power. On battery, the doorbell sleeps between events to conserve power and cannot maintain the Pre-Roll buffer. Check Device Health — Power Source should say Hardwired.

3

Enable Pre-Roll in settings

In the Ring app, go to the doorbell Device Settings, then Video Settings. Toggle on Pre-Roll Video or Video Timeline Preview. If the option is grayed out, the doorbell is not receiving hardwired power or the firmware needs updating. After enabling, the next motion event should include the 4-second Pre-Roll at the beginning of the clip.

4

Understand Pre-Roll limitations

Pre-Roll video is lower quality than the main recording — it is captured in black-and-white at reduced resolution to minimize power and bandwidth usage. It is useful for seeing who or what approached before the main recording starts, but it will not have the same detail or color as the main clip. The 4-second buffer is fixed and cannot be extended.

5

Fix Pre-Roll that stopped working

If Pre-Roll was working and stopped, check the power source first — a brownout or transformer issue may have caused the doorbell to switch to battery mode. Also check for firmware updates. Ring occasionally changes Pre-Roll behavior in updates. Restart the doorbell by pressing and holding the setup button for 10 seconds. After reboot, verify Pre-Roll is still enabled in settings.

Quick Solutions

Check doorbell wiring voltage or recharge battery
Add WiFi extender near front door
Power cycle the doorbell for 30 seconds
Configure motion zones to reduce false alerts
Verify cloud subscription is active for recording
Update doorbell firmware to latest version

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up motion scheduling or snooze alerts during times when regular activity is expected like when kids come home from school. Use pre-recorded quick replies so the doorbell can respond to visitors automatically when you cannot answer.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
