Problem Description

Your Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 shows a power warning, poor power, or completely shuts off despite being hardwired to your existing doorbell transformer. The Pro 2 requires a minimum of 16VAC at 30VA from the doorbell transformer. Standard doorbell transformers rated at 8VAC or 10VAC do not provide sufficient voltage and must be upgraded for the Pro 2 to function reliably.

Symptoms

  • Ring app shows Poor Power or Low Power warning for doorbell
  • Doorbell powers off intermittently and loses WiFi connection
  • Live view works briefly then camera goes offline
  • Pre-roll and 3D motion detection features disabled due to power
  • Doorbell reboots every few minutes
  • Power warning appears even with new transformer installed

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Original doorbell transformer rated below 16VAC minimum
  • Transformer output dropping under load due to age or undersizing
  • Long wire run from transformer increasing resistance and reducing voltage
  • Ring Pro Power Kit not installed in chime box
  • Multiple doorbells sharing one transformer exceeding its VA rating
  • Transformer VA rating too low even if voltage is correct

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Never work on doorbell transformer wiring without turning off the circuit breaker first. Even low-voltage doorbell wiring can deliver a mild shock and the transformer primary wiring operates at mains voltage which is dangerous.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Transformer Voltage Under Load

Use a multimeter set to AC voltage and measure the voltage at the two wires on the back of the Ring Doorbell Pro 2 while it is powered on and operating. The reading should be between 16VAC and 24VAC under load. If the reading is below 16VAC the transformer is insufficient. A reading of 8VAC to 12VAC indicates a standard residential chime transformer that must be replaced with a Ring-compatible 16VAC 30VA transformer before the Pro 2 will operate reliably.

Install the Ring Pro Power Kit

The Ring Pro Power Kit is a small device included in the Ring Doorbell Pro 2 box that must be installed inside your existing doorbell chime. Open your interior doorbell chime cover and locate the FRONT and TRANS terminals. Connect the Ring Pro Power Kit in parallel with the chime mechanism across these terminals. The Pro Power Kit bypasses the chime's voltage-limiting components and ensures the Pro 2 receives full transformer voltage without the chime blocking current.

3

Replace the Doorbell Transformer

Most homes built before 2010 have doorbell transformers rated at only 8VAC or 16VAC at 10VA which is insufficient for the Ring Pro 2. Purchase a replacement transformer rated for 16VAC at 30VA minimum. The transformer is typically located in the basement, attic, or near the electrical panel. Turn off the circuit breaker for the doorbell circuit before replacing. After installing the new transformer remeasure voltage at the doorbell to confirm it reads 16VAC or higher.

4

Check Device Health in Ring App

Open the Ring app and go to the Doorbell Pro 2 device settings then Device Health. The power section shows the measured voltage currently reaching the doorbell. Ring displays specific voltage warnings based on measured values. A voltage below 16V triggers the Poor Power warning. Use this reading to confirm whether the issue is transformer voltage or a wiring resistance problem reducing voltage at the doorbell end.

5

Reduce Wiring Resistance

Very long doorbell wire runs from the transformer to the doorbell reduce the voltage that reaches the Pro 2. If the wire run exceeds 15 metres the resistance can drop voltage below the minimum. Either shorten the wire run or replace thin 20-gauge doorbell wire with heavier 18-gauge wire between the transformer and the doorbell. Thicker wire has lower resistance and delivers more of the transformer voltage to the Pro 2.

Quick Solutions

Replace doorbell transformer with a 16VAC 30VA or higher model
Install the Ring Pro Power Kit included with Pro 2 in the chime box
Check transformer output voltage under load with a multimeter
Upgrade wire gauge if transformer is very far from doorbell
Ensure only one doorbell is connected to the transformer
Check Device Health in Ring app for exact power voltage reading

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

After installing a new transformer or the Ring Pro Power Kit check the Device Health voltage reading in the Ring app. Confirm it shows above 3900 mV which is the Ring app representation of adequate transformer voltage for full feature operation.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Original doorbell transformer rated below 16VAC minimum
  • Transformer output dropping under load
  • Long wire run from transformer increasing resistance and reducing
  • Ring Pro Power Kit not installed in chime box
  • Multiple doorbells sharing one transformer exceeding its VA rating
