Problem Description

Your Ring doorbell is stuck showing a continuously spinning blue light and will not complete setup or return to normal operation. The spinning blue LED means the doorbell is in setup mode waiting for a phone to connect and complete configuration. Normally this happens briefly during initial setup but when the doorbell gets stuck in this state it means either a previous setup failed partway through, a firmware update corrupted the device state, or the doorbell lost its WiFi configuration and reverted to setup mode. The doorbell is not functional while stuck in this loop and will not record video, detect motion, or ring the chime.

Symptoms

  • Ring doorbell LED spins blue continuously for hours or days
  • Doorbell does not respond to physical button presses for the doorbell ring
  • Ring app shows the device as offline or in setup mode
  • Doorbell was working then suddenly entered setup mode on its own
  • After a power outage the doorbell is stuck on spinning blue
  • Multiple setup attempts fail and the doorbell returns to spinning blue

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Previous setup attempt failed leaving the device in a partial configuration state
  • Firmware update interrupted by power loss or WiFi disconnect
  • WiFi network changed or password changed and doorbell reverted to setup mode
  • Hardwired doorbell not receiving enough voltage causing repeated reboot into setup
  • Internal memory corruption requiring hard reset to clear
  • Battery completely died and doorbell lost all configuration data

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

A hard reset erases the WiFi configuration but does not remove the doorbell from your Ring account. You do not need to remove and re-add the device to your account. After the hard reset simply reconnect to WiFi through the Ring app and all your settings, motion zones, and linked chimes will be preserved.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Perform a Hard Reset

Press and hold the orange setup button on the Ring doorbell for a full 25 seconds without releasing. On Ring Doorbell Pro the button is on the right side. On Ring Doorbell 2, 3, and 4 it is on the back. The LED will flash several patterns during the hold. After 25 seconds release the button. The LED will turn off completely for about 30 seconds as the device reboots. Then the spinning blue will return indicating it is in a clean setup mode ready for a fresh configuration.

2

Charge Battery Models Fully

If your Ring doorbell has a battery remove it and connect it to the USB charging cable. Charge until the LED on the battery turns solid green indicating a full charge. A doorbell with low battery can enter setup mode but fail to complete the WiFi connection step because it does not have enough power to sustain the radio. Reinstall the fully charged battery then proceed with setup.

Check Transformer Voltage for Hardwired Models

For hardwired Ring doorbells like Ring Pro and Pro 2 the doorbell requires 16 to 24 volts AC from the doorbell transformer. Insufficient voltage causes the doorbell to repeatedly reboot into setup mode. Use a multimeter at the doorbell wires to check voltage. If below 16V replace the transformer with a Ring-compatible 16V 30VA model. Also check that the wiring connections are tight and not corroded.

Complete Setup Through the Ring App

With the doorbell in setup mode showing spinning blue open the Ring app. If the device is already in your account tap it and select Reconnect or Set Up. If it is a new device tap Set Up a Device. Scan the QR code or MAC barcode on the Ring device or its packaging. Follow every step including the WiFi connection step. Do not skip any steps or close the app during setup. Keep your phone within 5 feet of the doorbell throughout.

5

Address Persistent Setup Loop

If the doorbell completes setup in the app but returns to spinning blue within minutes the WiFi connection is failing after setup. Check that your WiFi is 2.4GHz WPA2. Check signal strength at the doorbell location. If the RSSI is below minus 65 dBm the signal is too weak and the doorbell cannot maintain its connection. Add a Ring Chime Pro or WiFi extender near the doorbell. Also try setting up on a mobile hotspot to isolate whether the issue is your router.

Quick Solutions

Perform a hard reset by holding the setup button for 20 to 25 seconds
Complete the full setup process through the Ring app after reset
Check and fix transformer voltage for hardwired doorbells
Fully charge battery before attempting setup on battery models
Use the Ring app to step through setup without skipping any steps
Contact Ring support if hard reset does not clear the setup loop

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If flickering only happens on dimming, the issue is almost always the dimmer's minimum-load setting, not the bulb — it's drawing less current than the dimmer expects.

Pro Tip

After successful setup watch the doorbell for 30 minutes to confirm it stays connected. The LED should show a solid light or turn off depending on your LED settings in the app. If it returns to spinning blue within this window there is an underlying connectivity issue that needs to be resolved before the setup will stick.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
