Problem Description

Your Ring Video Doorbell is experiencing battery drain, power supply issues, or charging problems. Unreliable power affects the Video Doorbell performance and can cause it to go offline, miss events, or fail to respond when you need it most. Specifically, the issue involves doorbell wired power indicator. The steps below walk you through diagnosing the root cause and applying proven fixes so your Video Doorbell works reliably again.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The wired power indicator in Device Health shows you whether the doorbell transformer is providing enough power. If it shows Good or Sufficient, you are fine. If it shows Poor or Not Charging, the transformer is undersized or the wiring has too much resistance. The Ring app shows voltage in millivolts — anything above 3,900 mV is good, 3,600-3,900 mV is marginal, and below 3,600 mV will cause random reboots and missed recordings. Old houses often have 30-year-old transformers that were designed for a simple mechanical chime, not a WiFi camera. Upgrading the transformer is usually a 15-minute job.

Symptoms

  • Device shows as offline in the app
  • Device does not respond to commands
  • App cannot connect to device
  • Features not working as expected
  • Device disconnects frequently
  • Automations fail to trigger
  • Voice commands not recognized

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
  • Power supply issue or loose connection
  • Account not linked correctly
  • Too many devices causing network congestion
  • Interference from other wireless devices

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Hardwired installation involves working with electrical wiring. Turn off the breaker before touching any wires. If you are not comfortable with basic wiring hire a licensed electrician. Some older homes may need a transformer upgrade from 10V to the 16-24V required by modern video doorbells.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check the power indicator in Device Health

In the Ring app, select the doorbell, tap Device Health, and look for the Power Source field. It should say Hardwired if the doorbell is receiving power from wiring. If it says Battery, the doorbell is not drawing power from the wires — either the transformer is off, the wiring is disconnected, or the voltage is too low for the doorbell to recognize it as a wired source.

2

Understand the LED indicator for power status

The doorbell button has a built-in LED that shows status. During normal operation, it glows a circle pattern. While charging from wired power, some models show a specific LED pattern. If the LED is completely off and the doorbell is unresponsive, it has no power at all. If the LED shows normal status but Device Health says Battery, the wiring is providing enough power to trickle charge but not enough to register as hardwired.

3

Check transformer voltage

The doorbell needs 16-24V AC from the transformer to register as hardwired. If the transformer outputs less than 16V, the doorbell runs on battery and shows Battery as the power source. Locate the transformer and check its voltage rating. Replace with a 16-24V, 10-30VA transformer if yours is underpowered. A 24V transformer is best.

4

Verify wiring connections at both ends

Check the wire connections at the doorbell mounting bracket (two terminal screws) and at the transformer. Loose connections cause intermittent power. Tighten the terminal screws so the wire is firmly clamped. At the transformer, verify the wires are secure. Also check for wire breaks or corrosion along the run — especially where the wire passes through the wall or door frame.

5

Check the chime and bypass configuration

If you have an existing mechanical chime in the circuit, a chime bypass module may be needed. Without the bypass, the chime can interfere with power delivery to the doorbell. Install the Ring-provided bypass module across the chime terminals. After installing, check Device Health again — the Power Source should switch from Battery to Hardwired within a few minutes.

Quick Solutions

Check doorbell wiring voltage or recharge battery
Add WiFi extender near front door
Power cycle the doorbell for 30 seconds
Configure motion zones to reduce false alerts
Verify cloud subscription is active for recording
Update doorbell firmware to latest version

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

Set up motion scheduling or snooze alerts during times when regular activity is expected like when kids come home from school. Use pre-recorded quick replies so the doorbell can respond to visitors automatically when you cannot answer.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • WiFi connection unstable or device too far from router
  • Device firmware or app needs updating
  • Device not properly set up during initial pairing
