Problem Description

Your Ring wired doorbell worked perfectly for years but suddenly stopped. No lights come on when the button is pressed and the app shows it offline. You have not changed anything with your WiFi or wiring. It just died one day with no warning. This is common for Ring wired doorbells after 3-5 years of continuous use.

Symptoms

  • Doorbell completely dead with no LED lights
  • App shows doorbell offline and unreachable
  • Pressing button produces no sound or response
  • Doorbell worked yesterday but dead today
  • No changes to WiFi router or transformer wiring
  • Device was working for 3 or more years before failing

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Internal components failed due to age and heat cycles
  • Transformer no longer providing sufficient voltage
  • Doorbell wiring corroded or connection loosened
  • Power surge damaged doorbell electronics
  • WiFi module failed while power module still works
  • Firmware update bricked the device

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off the breaker before touching doorbell wiring. Even low voltage can shock you and damage equipment.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Transformer Voltage

Ring wired doorbells need 16-24 volts AC from the transformer. Use a multimeter set to AC voltage. Touch probes to transformer terminals. If voltage is below 16V your transformer has weakened over time and needs replacement. Transformers can degrade especially if undersized for Ring power demands.

Inspect Wiring Connections

Turn off breaker to doorbell circuit. Remove doorbell from mount. Check the two wire connections on the back. Look for corrosion green oxidation or loose wires. Clean connections with fine sandpaper if corroded. Reattach wires securely. Outdoor exposure causes corrosion over years.

Test With Known Good Transformer

If you have access to a different 16-24VAC 30VA transformer temporarily connect it to your doorbell. If doorbell powers on with new transformer your original transformer failed. Ring Pro and Pro 2 need transformers rated at least 16VAC 30VA. Undersized transformers fail faster.

4

Attempt Factory Reset

Even if doorbell appears dead try a factory reset. Press and hold the orange setup button for 30 seconds. Wait 5 minutes. If any LED activity occurs the doorbell is not completely dead. If still no response the internal electronics have likely failed permanently.

5

Check Warranty and Request Replacement

Ring offers limited warranty typically 1-2 years but sometimes extends for known issues. Log into your Ring account and check warranty status. Contact Ring support via chat or phone. Explain the doorbell died after years of working. They may offer replacement or discount even if out of warranty.

Quick Solutions

Check transformer voltage with multimeter
Inspect and tighten wiring connections
Try factory reset by holding setup button 20 seconds
Test with different transformer rated 16-24VAC 30VA
Check if doorbell is on Ring recall list
Contact Ring support for replacement if under warranty

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Ring wired doorbells run hot due to continuous power draw. Heat is the main cause of electronics failure over time.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
