Problem Description

During Ring device setup the app shows error code 201 or a message saying setup failed device not found. Your phone successfully connects to the Ring temporary WiFi hotspot but the app cannot discover or communicate with the Ring device to complete pairing. Error 201 means the Ring app lost communication with the Ring device during the setup handshake. This is different from error -9 which is a WiFi password issue. Error 201 is a Bluetooth or local network discovery failure between your phone and the Ring device.

Symptoms

  • Ring app shows error 201 or setup failed device not found
  • Phone connects to Ring WiFi hotspot but setup does not proceed
  • Setup gets past the QR code scan then fails with error 201
  • App shows searching for device indefinitely then times out
  • Setup worked partially but failed at the final pairing step
  • Multiple setup attempts all fail at the same point with 201

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth disabled on phone preventing local device discovery
  • Phone location services disabled which Ring requires for Bluetooth pairing
  • Ring app does not have Bluetooth and location permissions granted
  • Phone connected to VPN or restrictive network during setup
  • Ring device too far from phone during setup handshake
  • Previous failed setup attempt left device in a partial state requiring reset

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Error 201 sometimes appears when Ring servers are experiencing issues even though it looks like a local error. Check status.ring.com before extensive troubleshooting. If Ring services are degraded wait and try setup later.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Enable Bluetooth and Location Services

Ring setup uses Bluetooth Low Energy to discover and communicate with the device during initial pairing. On iPhone go to Settings then Privacy then Bluetooth and ensure Ring is enabled. Also enable Location Services under Settings then Privacy then Location Services. On Android go to Settings then Connected Devices and ensure Bluetooth is on. Also enable Location under Settings then Location. Both must be on for Ring setup.

2

Grant Full App Permissions

On iPhone go to Settings then Ring and verify Bluetooth, Location While Using, Local Network, and Camera permissions are all enabled. On Android go to Settings then Apps then Ring then Permissions and enable Location set to Allow All The Time, Nearby Devices, Camera, and Phone. Missing any of these permissions causes error 201 during the discovery phase.

3

Hard Reset the Ring Device

If a previous setup attempt partially completed the Ring device may be in a stuck state. Press and hold the orange setup button on the Ring device for 20 to 25 seconds. The LED will flash then turn off. Release the button and wait 1 minute for the device to fully reboot. The LED will begin spinning blue indicating it is in setup mode and ready for a fresh pairing attempt.

4

Disable VPN and Network Management Apps

VPNs, WiFi management apps, and network security apps can intercept or block the local Bluetooth and network traffic Ring uses during setup. Disable any VPN on your phone. Close apps like WiFi Analyzer, NetGuard, Blokada, or any DNS filtering app. Try the Ring setup again. Re-enable these apps after setup completes.

5

Try Setup on a Different Phone

If error 201 persists try running the Ring setup from a different phone logged into the same Ring account. Some phone models have Bluetooth stack issues that prevent Ring discovery. Install the Ring app on a family member phone, log into your account, and attempt setup. After setup completes you can log out of that phone and continue using your original phone for daily Ring use.

Quick Solutions

Enable Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone
Grant Ring app full Bluetooth and Location permissions
Disable VPN and any WiFi management apps during setup
Hard reset the Ring device to clear any partial setup state
Keep phone within 3 feet of Ring device during entire setup
Try setup on a different phone if errors persist

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

During setup keep your phone screen on and the Ring app in the foreground at all times. If your phone screen turns off or you switch to another app even briefly the Bluetooth connection to the Ring device drops causing error 201. Disable auto-lock on your phone temporarily during setup.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
