Identify the Type of Smell

A chemical or plastic smell from a brand new unit or new filter is normal off-gassing that typically clears within 24 to 48 hours. Run the purifier at maximum fan speed in a well-ventilated room to accelerate this process. A musty or moldy smell indicates moisture issues. A burning smell could indicate a motor or electrical problem and the unit should be unplugged immediately and inspected before further use.

Check and Replace the Carbon Filter

The activated carbon layer in Dyson filters absorbs VOCs, cooking odors, and chemical fumes. Once saturated, it can release these trapped odors back into the room. Check the filter age in the Dyson Link app. If the filter is older than 12 months or has been used in a kitchen or near smoking areas, replace it even if the app has not triggered the replacement notification. Remove the old filter and inspect it for discoloration or visible debris.

Clean the Internal Airflow Path

Turn off and unplug the purifier. Remove the filter. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the inside of the filter chamber, the air intake grilles, and the amplifier loop or tower outlet. Dust and debris can accumulate in these areas and produce a burnt smell when the motor heats up. For the air outlet slots, use a soft brush attachment on a vacuum to remove trapped dust. Address Moisture and Mold for Humidifier Models

If you have a Dyson PH03 or PH04 with humidifier function, empty the water tank completely. Fill it with a solution of one tablespoon citric acid per liter of warm water. Let it soak for 30 minutes, then scrub with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Also clean the evaporator by running a deep clean cycle through the Dyson Link app. Bacterial growth in the water tank is the most common source of musty smells in humidifier models.

Run Extended Purification Cycle

After cleaning, install the new or cleaned filter and run the purifier at maximum speed for at least 12 hours with windows open. This flushes any remaining odors from the internal components and allows the new filter to finish its initial off-gassing period. After 12 hours, close the windows and switch to auto mode. If any burning or electrical smell persists after cleaning, discontinue use and contact Dyson support.
