Problem Description

Your Echo Show screen is frozen and unresponsive to taps or voice commands. A force restart fixes most freezes — press and hold the mute button and volume down button simultaneously for 15 seconds until the screen goes black. The device will reboot automatically. This guide covers force restart methods and when a factory reset is needed.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

A frozen, unresponsive Echo Show is almost always a software hang, and a force restart clears it — hold the device's buttons per your model, or just unplug it for 30 seconds and back in. Occasional freezes are normal; frequent ones point to heat or resource pressure.

Start with the force restart, then reduce what's stressing it: keep it ventilated and out of direct sun, trim heavy widgets/apps, and improve WiFi so content doesn't hang mid-load. Keep firmware current, and if it freezes repeatedly even after a factory reset, the hardware may be failing.

Symptoms

  • Screen frozen
  • No response to touch or voice
  • Stuck on one screen
  • Will not restart from menu
  • Frozen after an app/video
  • Black or stuck screen
  • Repeated freezing
  • Unresponsive

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Software freeze
  • Overheating
  • Memory/storage pressure
  • A stuck app or video
  • Firmware glitch
  • Weak WiFi hanging content
  • Needs a force restart
  • Failing hardware (rare)

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Keep Echo Show away from direct sunlight to prevent overheating.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Force restart the Echo Show

If the screen is completely frozen and does not respond to touch or voice, press and hold the power button on top of the device for 20 seconds until the screen goes black. Release the button and wait for it to reboot — this takes about 60-90 seconds. If there is no power button on your model, unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. A force restart clears whatever software state caused the freeze without losing your settings or accounts.

Check if only the touchscreen is frozen

If the screen displays content but does not respond to touch, try a voice command: "Alexa, go home." If Alexa responds and the screen changes, the touch digitiser has crashed but the rest of the device is working. A restart fixes this. If voice also does not work, the entire device is locked up and needs a hard power cycle. Repeated touch freezes on a specific Echo Show model may indicate a hardware defect — check if this doesn't work after a factory reset.

3

Free up device memory

Echo Shows can freeze when running too many skills, widgets, or background processes simultaneously. The Echo Show 15 is particularly susceptible when displaying multiple widgets on its home panel. After restarting, remove widgets you do not actively use — press and hold the home screen, tap Edit, and remove unnecessary ones. Close any active video streams or music. Reducing the widget count lowers memory usage and prevents future freezes.

4

Check for overheating

Echo Shows can throttle or freeze when they overheat. Feel the back of the device — if it is very hot, unplug it and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Common causes: the device is in direct sunlight, placed in an enclosed shelf with poor ventilation, or sitting on top of another heat-producing device. Move it to a location with at least 2 inches of clearance on all sides and away from heat sources.

5

Factory reset if freezes keep recurring

If the screen freezes repeatedly after restarts, a factory reset clears corrupted software. Say "Alexa, go to settings" or swipe down and tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. The device wipes all local data and restarts fresh. You will need to set it up again through the Alexa app, re-link accounts, and re-configure your home screen. If freezes continue after a factory reset, the hardware may be defective — contact Amazon support.

Quick Solutions

Force-restart (hold buttons per model)
Unplug for 30 seconds and back in
Keep it cool and ventilated
Free memory / limit background apps
Update firmware
Improve WiFi so content does not hang
Factory reset if it recurs
Contact Amazon if it persists

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up geofencing so your system arms automatically when everyone leaves home and disarms when the first person returns. This eliminates the chance of forgetting to arm the system and provides seamless daily security.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
