- Ring skill not linked in Alexa
- Voice code not set up in Ring app
- Alexa Guard conflicting with Ring
Problem Description
Alexa does not arm or disarm your Ring Alarm when you issue voice commands. Alexa says she cannot do that, asks for a code but rejects your input, or gives a generic error. Ring Alarm voice control requires two separate configuration steps — enabling the Ring skill in Alexa AND setting up a unique voice code in the Ring app. Most failures are caused by one of these two steps being incomplete.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Alexa failing to arm/disarm Ring Alarm is usually the skill link or the voice-code requirement: disarming by voice needs a PIN (voice code) for security, and arming needs the Ring skill properly linked and the account matched.
Start by confirming the Ring skill is enabled and signed into the right account in Alexa, and set up the voice code that disarming requires. Arming should work by voice once linked; disarming will always prompt for the code by design, so a "not working" disarm is often just the missing or mistyped voice PIN.
Symptoms
- Alexa says I cannot arm Ring Alarm
- Voice code not accepted by Alexa
- Alexa asks for code then fails
- Ring app works but Alexa does not
- Disarm works but arm fails
- Alexa says Ring is not responding
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Ring skill not linked in Alexa
- Voice code not set up in Ring app
- Alexa Guard conflicting with Ring
- Ring account needs reauthorization
- Two-factor blocking Alexa access
- Ring Alarm in test mode
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not share your Ring voice code. Anyone who knows the code can disarm your alarm using any Alexa device in your home.
Step-by-Step Solution
Disable and Re-Enable the Ring Skill in Alexa
Open the Alexa app, go to Skills and Games, search for Ring, and tap the Ring skill. If it is already enabled, disable it first then re-enable it and sign into your Ring account when prompted. App updates on either side can invalidate the skill authorization silently. Re-enabling forces a fresh OAuth token exchange between Alexa and Ring.
Set Up Your Voice Code in the Ring App
Alexa requires a separate voice code to arm and disarm Ring Alarm — this is different from your PIN. In the Ring app go to Devices then tap your Alarm Base Station then Shared Users then your user name then Voice Code. Set a 4-digit code. Without this code configured in Ring, Alexa will prompt for a code but any entry will be rejected. The voice code must be set per user, not globally.
Use the Correct Alexa Command Sequence
Say 'Alexa, arm Ring.' Wait for Alexa to prompt you for your voice code, then speak the 4 digits clearly — one digit at a time if needed. Do not attempt to say the code in the same sentence as the arm command. Alexa Guard arming commands use a different syntax than Ring Alarm arming, and mixing the two will produce errors.
Check for Alexa Guard Conflict
If Alexa Guard is enabled on your account, it may intercept arm or disarm commands intended for Ring Alarm. Open the Alexa app, go to More then Settings then Guard, and check whether Guard mode is active. Guard and Ring Alarm can coexist but require separate configurations. If Guard is interfering, configure Ring as the guard integration or disable Guard temporarily to test.
Verify Ring Alarm Is Not in Test Mode
In the Ring app check your Alarm Base Station settings for Test Mode. When Test Mode is active, Ring Alarm disables several integrations including Alexa voice control as a safety precaution to prevent accidental arming during testing. Exit Test Mode in the Ring app and retry the Alexa arming command.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If voice commands stopped working after relinking the account, check that the skill or action is still enabled — relinking sometimes disables it silently.
You can set different voice codes for different household members. Each person can have their own code for tracking who armed or disarmed.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
