Problem Description

You are setting up the Wyze Gun Safe in its final location. Position and secure the safe — bolt it to a shelf, inside a closet, or in a nightstand using the pre-drilled mounting holes on the bottom and back of the safe. The included mounting hardware works on wood surfaces. For maximum security, anchor it to a structural surface. This guide covers positioning, anchoring, and organizing the interior.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The security of a portable safe comes down to whether it's anchored — an unbolted safe is a grab-and-go for a thief, so the real job in this step is fastening it to something solid through the built-in mounting holes. A nightstand drawer, closet shelf, or vehicle floor all work if you anchor into something that won't pull free.

Balance concealment against access: hidden is good, but you also want to reach and open it one-handed from where you'd actually need it. Pick a stable, flat spot, use proper anchors for that surface, and test the access angle before you commit.

Symptoms

  • Where to place and bolt the safe
  • Safe not secured to a surface
  • Mounting hardware questions
  • Safe tips or slides
  • Access angle awkward
  • Anchoring in a closet or drawer
  • Cable/tether options
  • Concealment vs accessibility

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Safe not bolted down (grab-and-go risk)
  • Placed on an unstable or uneven surface
  • Mounting holes not used
  • Location too concealed to open quickly
  • No anchor point in the chosen spot
  • Hardware wrong size or missing
  • Surface material will not hold anchors
  • Access blocked by the mounting spot

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always notify your monitoring provider before performing system tests to prevent dispatching emergency services unnecessarily. Never disable your security system for extended periods. If you smell gas or suspect a real emergency call 911 directly rather than relying on your smart system.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Position and secure the safe

The Wyze Smart Safe (second generation or larger model) should be placed on a stable, flat surface. Use the included steel mounting cable or bolt-down kit to anchor it to a fixed surface — a closet floor, heavy furniture, or wall stud. Without anchoring, the safe can be carried away. Thread the steel cable through the anchor point on the back of the safe and secure it to a fixed object. The safe weighs 20-30 lbs depending on the model, but is still portable without anchoring.

2

Set up the keypad and master code

After installing batteries (four AA), the keypad activates. Create a master code: press the programming button inside the safe door, enter your chosen 4-8 digit code, and press # to save. Test by closing the door and entering the code followed by #. The lock motor disengages and the door opens. You can also create guest codes for other authorized users — enter the master code, press *, then create additional codes. Guest codes can be deleted without changing the master code.

3

Enroll fingerprints for quick access

Enter your master code to open the safe. Press and hold the fingerprint sensor on the front until it beeps. Place your fingertip flat on the sensor and lift. Repeat 10 times with slight angle changes — the safe builds a 3D model of your fingerprint. After enrollment, the sensor beeps twice to confirm. Test immediately: close the safe and touch the sensor. The safe should unlock in under a second. Enroll at least 2 fingers on each hand. Wet, dirty, or very dry fingers may not register — moisturize and clean your fingertip before enrollment for the best template.

4

Configure the Wyze app settings

Pair the safe with the Wyze app via Bluetooth. The app shows an access log with timestamps for every open event, battery level, and whether the safe is currently locked or unlocked. Set auto-lock timing — the safe can automatically lock after 5, 10, or 30 seconds of being closed. Enable tamper alerts to get a notification if someone enters incorrect codes multiple times. The app also lets you add or remove fingerprints and guest codes remotely (while within Bluetooth range).

5

Backup access methods

The Wyze Safe includes a physical backup key and a USB-C emergency power port. Keep the backup keys in a separate secure location — a locked drawer, a relative house, or a safety deposit box. If the batteries die and you do not have the key, connect any USB-C cable with a power source (phone charger, power bank) to the emergency port on the bottom of the safe. This provides enough power to enter your PIN and open the door. Replace the batteries immediately after using emergency power.

Quick Solutions

Bolt the safe down through the mounting holes
Choose a stable, flat, solid surface
Use the included hardware or proper anchors
Balance concealment with quick access
Anchor into a stud, shelf, or drawer base
Match anchors to the surface material
Leave room to open the door fully
Test one-handed access from your normal position

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up geofencing so your system arms automatically when everyone leaves home and disarms when the first person returns. This eliminates the chance of forgetting to arm the system and provides seamless daily security.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Safe not bolted down (grab-and-go risk)
  • Placed on an unstable or uneven surface
  • Mounting holes not used
  • Location too concealed to open quickly
  • No anchor point in the chosen spot
