Problem Description

Roomba announced Error 9 and prompts you to tap its bumper. The front bumper is stuck in the pressed-in position or dislodged, so the robot thinks it's permanently jammed against a wall. Grit packed behind the bumper is the usual cause.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Error 9 is the front bumper reporting that it's stuck in the pressed-in position, so Roomba thinks it's permanently jammed against a wall. The bumper rides on springs and slides in and out; when dust, hair, or a stray cord packs into the thin seam behind it, the bumper can't spring back and the robot refuses to drive.

iRobot's prompt tells you to tap the bumper for a reason - a few firm taps usually shake the grit loose. If the bumper looks crooked or hangs off the front, it has simply popped off its clips and just needs to be pressed back on. A bumper that moves freely but still throws Error 9 has a failing internal sensor and needs service.

Symptoms

  • Roomba announces Error 9
  • Robot says to tap the bumper
  • Front bumper looks pushed in or crooked
  • Robot bumps walls harder than usual
  • Robot thinks it's constantly hitting something
  • Bumper doesn't spring back when pressed
  • Robot stops right after starting
  • Bumper sits unevenly or hangs off the front

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Dust and grit packed in the gap behind the bumper
  • The bumper is physically stuck in the compressed position
  • A cord or object wedged under the bumper
  • The bumper popped off its mounting clips
  • Hair jammed in the bumper's travel slots
  • Sticky residue binding the bumper to the body
  • The bumper's internal sensor blocked by debris
  • Impact damage from falling off a ledge

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If the bumper won't stay clipped on, or Error 9 returns with a clean and freely-moving bumper, stop running the robot near stairs; a stuck bumper affects obstacle detection. Contact iRobot.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Find the Bumper

The bumper is the wide, movable plastic band across the front half of the robot (a D-shaped front section on the s9). It floats on springs and pushes in when Roomba touches a wall. Error 9 means it's stuck pressed-in or blocked from moving freely.

2

Tap It Firmly

Press and release the bumper several times, then give it a few firm taps across its whole width. This dislodges grit caught in the slide mechanism - iRobot's own on-screen prompt is literally to tap the bumper, and it clears most Error 9s in seconds.

3

Check It Springs Back

Push the bumper straight in and let go. It should snap back out evenly on both the left and right sides. If one side stays pressed in, debris or a jam is holding it and needs to be cleared.

4

Clean the Bumper Gap

Look at the thin seam between the bumper and the body. Dust, hair, and grit pack into this gap and stop the bumper sliding. Run a dry cloth or a stiff card along the seam, and pick out hair strands with tweezers.

5

Clear Trapped Objects

Check under and behind the bumper for a charging cord, sock thread, or rug tassel wedged in. Pull out anything that limits how far the bumper can travel in and out.

6

Reseat a Dislodged Bumper

If the bumper hangs crooked or off the front of the robot, it has popped off its mounting clips. Line it up squarely and press firmly along its length until each clip snaps back into place.

7

Wipe Sticky Edges

If Roomba rolled through something sticky, residue can glue the bumper to the body. Wipe the bumper edges and the body seam with a barely-damp cloth, then dry them so the bumper slides freely again.

8

Restart and Watch

Press CLEAN and watch the first wall contact. The bumper should compress and rebound cleanly. If Error 9 returns with a clean, freely-moving bumper, the internal bumper sensor may be faulty - contact iRobot.

Quick Solutions

Tap the front bumper firmly several times to free it
Clean the gap between the bumper and the robot body
Remove any cord or object trapped under the bumper
Reseat a dislodged bumper onto its clips
Clear hair from the bumper's slide slots
Wipe sticky residue off the bumper edges
Press the bumper in and out to confirm it springs back
Contact iRobot if the bumper won't stay seated

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Tapping the bumper is iRobot's official first fix, not a joke - a few firm taps across its full width frees most Error 9s in seconds.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
