Problem Description

Your Roomba docks on the Home Base but does not charge. The battery indicator may not light up or shows depleted even after sitting on the dock overnight. The Roomba may make a tone when docking but fails to actually charge. This prevents scheduled cleanings and leaves you with a dead robot.

Symptoms

  • Roomba docks but battery stays depleted
  • No charging indicator light when docked
  • Battery was full now drains on dock
  • Roomba makes dock tone but no charge
  • Charging worked before now stopped
  • Have to manually charge with cord

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Charging contacts dirty on Roomba or base
  • Home Base not receiving power
  • Roomba not fully seated on dock
  • Battery reached end of lifespan
  • Home Base charging circuit failed
  • Debris preventing contact connection

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Only use official iRobot batteries and Home Bases. Third party chargers and batteries may not communicate properly with the Roomba firmware causing charging failures and potential damage.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Clean Charging Contacts

The Roomba has two metal charging contacts on the bottom front. The Home Base has matching contacts. Use a dry microfiber cloth or melamine foam to clean all four contacts. Dirt, dust, and oxidation build up over time and prevent electrical connection. Clean contacts until shiny. Do not use water or chemicals.

Verify Home Base Power

Check that the Home Base power indicator is illuminated. Unplug the base, wait 10 seconds, replug firmly. Try a different outlet. The base draws very little power so it may not trip a breaker but a faulty outlet or adapter can still fail. If no indicator light the base or adapter may be defective.

3

Reseat Roomba on Dock

Lift the Roomba completely off the dock. Place it back on, pushing it gently forward until it stops. You should hear a tone and see the battery indicator illuminate. If the Roomba is crooked or not pushed far enough forward the contacts will not align properly. Ensure the dock is against a wall so the Roomba cannot push it backward.

4

Check for Debris Interference

Hair, string, and debris can wrap around the front caster wheel and lift the Roomba just enough to prevent contact with charging plates. Flip the Roomba over and clean the front caster wheel housing completely. Also check that nothing is stuck to the charging contacts themselves.

5

Test Battery Health

Roomba batteries last 2-3 years with normal use. If your Roomba is older and runtime has decreased significantly the battery may need replacement. In the iRobot Home app check Battery Health under Robot Settings. If it shows Poor or needs replacement order an official iRobot battery. Third party batteries often cause charging issues.

Quick Solutions

Clean charging contacts with dry cloth
Verify Home Base power light is on
Reseat Roomba firmly on dock
Check for debris under Roomba
Try direct charging if available
Replace battery if old

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If drain continues after replacing batteries, check the event history — a stuck-open sensor or rapid polling loop burns through batteries in days.

Pro Tip

Position the Home Base against a wall with 4 feet of clearance on each side and 4 feet in front. If the base moves when Roomba docks the contacts may not align properly for charging.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
