Problem Description

Your Arlo Pro 5 spotlight activates constantly even when nothing is there. The light turns on for insects, moving branches, car headlights, or seemingly nothing at all. This drains your battery quickly and creates annoying notifications all night. The spotlight should only activate for real threats.

Symptoms

  • Spotlight turns on dozens of times per night
  • Battery drains in days instead of months due to spotlight
  • Light activates for bugs flying near camera
  • Passing car headlights trigger spotlight
  • Wind moving trees or bushes triggers spotlight
  • Spotlight activates but no recording or notification sent

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Motion sensitivity set too high for environment
  • Activity zones not configured to exclude problem areas
  • PIR motion sensor detecting heat from insects
  • Night vision IR attracting bugs that trigger spotlight
  • Spotlight set to always on instead of motion-activated
  • Weather changes causing false PIR triggers

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Disabling the spotlight means intruders will not be illuminated in recordings. Consider the security tradeoff before disabling.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Reduce Motion Sensitivity

Open the Arlo app and tap your Pro 5 camera. Go to Device Settings then Motion Detection. Lower sensitivity to around 50-60 percent. Test overnight and adjust. High sensitivity detects small movements like insects and leaves. Lower sensitivity requires larger motion like people or animals.

2

Configure Activity Zones

In Device Settings tap Activity Zones. Draw zones only where you want detection like your driveway and porch. Exclude trees bushes and streets. The camera ignores motion outside your zones. This prevents trees swaying in wind or cars passing on the street from triggering your spotlight.

3

Enable Smart Detection Filtering

Go to Device Settings then Smart Notifications. Enable Person Detection and Vehicle Detection. Turn off Other Motion. Now the spotlight and notifications only activate for people and vehicles. Insects and animals will not trigger alerts. This requires Arlo Secure subscription.

4

Adjust Spotlight Settings

In Device Settings tap Spotlight. Set it to Motion Activated not Always On. Reduce duration to 10-15 seconds instead of 30. Set brightness to medium instead of high. High brightness attracts more insects. You can also disable the spotlight entirely and rely on the excellent IR night vision.

5

Relocate Camera if Needed

Some locations just attract bugs. Near plants porch lights or water sources bugs will constantly trigger your camera. Consider mounting the camera higher or in a different location. A higher mount angle also reduces false triggers from ground-level insects and animals.

Quick Solutions

Reduce motion sensitivity to 50-70 percent
Create activity zones excluding trees roads and lights
Enable smart detection for person/vehicle only
Change spotlight to motion-activated with shorter duration
Mount camera away from bug-attracting areas
Disable spotlight and rely on IR night vision only

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If flickering only happens on dimming, the issue is almost always the dimmer's minimum-load setting, not the bulb — it's drawing less current than the dimmer expects.

Pro Tip

Bugs are attracted to the IR emitters used for night vision. This is unavoidable but reducing spotlight use and using activity zones helps.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

  • Motion sensitivity set too high for environment
  • Activity zones not configured to exclude problem areas
  • PIR motion sensor detecting heat from insects
  • Night vision IR attracting bugs that trigger spotlight
  • Spotlight set to always on instead of motion-activated
