Problem Description

You are setting up the eufy SoloCam E40 for the first time. The E40 is a wire-free outdoor camera with built-in storage (8GB on-device). Charge the camera fully via the USB-C port on the back before mounting. It connects directly to 2.4GHz WiFi without needing a HomeBase. This guide covers charging, WiFi pairing, and mounting.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The eufy SoloCam E40 is a standalone, wire-free camera with a built-in solar panel — no HomeBase required — so it joins your 2.4GHz WiFi directly. Setup snags are the usual wire-free-camera ones: a 5GHz-only network, weak signal where you're mounting it, or the QR code not scanning.

Charge the camera first, put it in pairing mode, and connect it to a 2.4GHz network (not 5GHz) with the correct password, holding the QR code at the distance the app suggests until it chimes. Confirm the mount location has solid 2.4GHz coverage, since it stores and streams locally over WiFi, and install any firmware. Position it with the solar panel facing sun to keep it charged.

Symptoms

  • Setting up the SoloCam E40
  • Won't connect to WiFi
  • App can't find it
  • QR won't scan
  • Charging before setup
  • Won't pair
  • Offline after setup
  • Solar/placement questions

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Connecting to 5GHz not 2.4GHz
  • Weak 2.4GHz at the mount location
  • Battery not charged before setup
  • QR code at the wrong distance
  • Camera not in pairing mode
  • Wrong WiFi password
  • Firmware update pending
  • Router blocking the device

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Charge the camera before mounting

The eufy SoloCam E40 has a built-in rechargeable battery. Charge it fully using the included USB-C cable before installation — the initial charge takes approximately 6-8 hours. The LED on the back turns solid green when fully charged. Do not try to set up the camera while it is charging — remove the charging cable before starting the app setup process.

2

Add the camera in the eufy Security app

Open the eufy Security app. Tap + > Add Device > SoloCam E40. The app generates a QR code. Hold your phone so the camera can scan the QR code (the camera faces your phone screen at about 6-8 inches). After scanning, the camera announces Connection successful or beeps. The app then prompts you to connect the camera to your 2.4GHz WiFi network. Enter your WiFi password.

3

Mount the camera

The SoloCam E40 includes a magnetic mount base. Screw the base into the wall or eave using the included screws and anchors. The camera attaches magnetically to the base — it clicks firmly into place and can be adjusted to any angle. Mount it 7-10 feet high, angled slightly downward, for best coverage. The E40 has a 130-degree field of view. Point it to cover the main approach to your door or the area you want to monitor.

4

Configure motion detection and alerts

After mounting, go to the camera settings in the eufy app. Set Motion Detection Sensitivity to medium (level 4-5) to start. Enable Human Detection (AI-powered, processed on the camera) to filter alerts to only people. Set Activity Zones to exclude high-traffic areas like streets. Set the Alert Schedule if you only want notifications during certain hours. Test by walking past the camera and checking that you receive a notification.

5

Manage battery life and local storage

The SoloCam E40 stores recordings locally on 8GB built-in storage — no HomeBase or subscription required. At default settings, 8GB stores approximately 2-3 months of motion events. The battery lasts 3-6 months per charge depending on event frequency. To maximize battery: reduce sensitivity, enable Human Detection only (fewer false triggers), and set clip length to 15 seconds. Check battery level in the eufy app under the camera settings.

Quick Solutions

Connect to a 2.4GHz WiFi network
Ensure strong 2.4GHz at the mount spot
Charge the camera before setup
Hold the QR code steady at the right distance
Put the camera in pairing mode
Enter the correct WiFi password
Install any firmware update
Allow the device on the router

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
