- Codes not saved correctly during programming
- Lock in lockout mode after too many failed attempts
- Mastercode changed, invalidating dependent programming
Problem Description
Your Kwikset SmartCode lock rejects codes that you have programmed. You enter your code on the keypad and the lock beeps with an error instead of unlocking. This can happen when codes were not saved correctly during programming, the lock is in lockout mode after too many failed attempts, or the master code has been changed.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
When a Kwikset SmartCode rejects codes with an error beep, the cause is usually in how the codes were programmed or a temporary lockout, not a broken lock. Kwikset keypads enforce a rule that catches many people: the first four digits of every code must be unique, so two codes that begin with the same four numbers can't coexist and one will fail. Programming also times out after about 20 seconds per step - a pause mid-sequence ends it with three beeps and an 'X', leaving the code half-saved. Reprogramming carefully, following the exact sequence for your model, fixes the majority of 'won't accept my code' cases.
The other frequent triggers are lockout and power. After several wrong entries the lock enters a lockout for about a minute and rejects even correct codes until it clears - simply waiting resolves it. And weak batteries cause the touchpad to miss or misread presses, which looks exactly like a code failure, so a fresh set of name-brand AA alkaline is a smart early step. Note that changing the Mastercode can affect dependent programming, so re-verify your user codes afterward. If codes remain corrupted no matter what, a factory reset and clean reprogram returns the lock to a known-good state.
Symptoms
- Programmed codes rejected at the keypad
- Lock beeps an error instead of unlocking
- Codes worked before but stopped
- Keypad flashes X / triple-beeps on entry
- Lock in lockout after failed attempts
- Some codes work while others don't
- New codes won't save during programming
- All codes suddenly stopped after a mastercode change
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Codes not saved correctly during programming
- Lock in lockout mode after too many failed attempts
- Mastercode changed, invalidating dependent programming
- Two codes sharing the same first four digits
- Programming timed out (20s) before the code was confirmed
- Low batteries dropping keypresses
- Keypad dirty or worn so presses aren't registering
- Firmware glitch requiring a reset
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Factory reset erases ALL codes including master code.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check if the code was programmed correctly
Try the code on the exterior keypad: enter the digits and press the Lock button to unlock. If the lock flashes red and beeps twice, the code is not recognized. The most common mistake is entering the code without pressing Lock at the end. Codes must be 4-8 digits — if you tried to program a 3-digit or 9-digit code, it was rejected silently. Reprogram the code: press Program (interior), enter master code, press Lock, press 1, enter user slot, enter the code, press Lock.
Check if the lock is in lockout mode
After 5 incorrect code entries, SmartCode locks disable the keypad for 1 minute. After 10 incorrect entries, the lockout extends to 3-5 minutes. During lockout, no codes work and the keypad does not respond. Wait for the lockout to expire (the lock beeps when it is ready), then try the correct code. If you are locked out and cannot wait, use the physical key.
Check the user code slot is not full
SmartCode models have different code limits: the 260 supports 6 codes, the 888 and 914 support 30 codes, the Halo supports 250 codes. If all slots are full, new codes are rejected during programming. Delete old codes you no longer need: press Program, master code, Lock, press 2, enter the slot number to delete, Lock. Then try adding the new code.
Check if a Z-Wave hub is overriding local codes
If the SmartCode is paired to a Z-Wave hub, some hubs can manage codes remotely and may disable local code programming. Check your hub lock settings for a Lock Programming setting or Code Management option. Some hubs push their own code list to the lock, overwriting locally programmed codes. If you add a code on the keypad but it does not work after a few minutes, the hub may be syncing its code list and deleting the locally added code.
Factory reset codes if nothing works
If codes are completely broken, delete all user codes: press Program, master code, Lock, press 5, Lock. This wipes all user codes but keeps the master code. Then reprogram each code one at a time, testing each immediately after programming. If even the master code does not work, do a full factory reset (remove batteries, hold Program, reinstall batteries, hold 30 seconds). This resets the master code to factory default.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.
Write down your master code and store safely. Without it, you'll need factory reset.
Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
