Problem Description

You are setting up the Wyze Gun Safe for the first time. Install the 4xAA batteries in the battery compartment on the inside of the safe door. The safe opens via fingerprint reader (on the front), keypad code, physical key, or the Wyze app. Enroll your fingerprints first by holding your finger on the sensor on the front panel. This guide covers battery installation, fingerprint enrollment, and app pairing.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Wyze Gun Safe setup is quick, but a few things are worth getting right the first time because it's a security device. It runs on four AA batteries, and the single most important habit is storing the physical backup keys somewhere outside the safe — locked-out-with-the-keys-inside is the classic mistake.

Enroll each fingerprint several times from slightly different angles so it reads reliably when you're in a hurry, set a master code before adding users, and replace the batteries at the first low warning rather than waiting. Test every unlock method before you rely on the safe.

Symptoms

  • Unsure how to power on the safe
  • Fingerprint will not enroll
  • Keypad code setup unclear
  • Batteries installed but no response
  • Backup key location question
  • App will not connect to the safe
  • Auto-lock behavior unclear
  • Low-battery warning at setup

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • 4x AA batteries not seated or low
  • Fingerprint enrolled from one angle only
  • Master code not set before adding users
  • Safe not in pairing/enroll mode
  • Backup keys stored inside the safe
  • Bluetooth off during app pairing
  • Reset needed before first setup
  • Battery polarity reversed

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Install the batteries

The Wyze Gun Safe uses four AA batteries to power the biometric and keypad lock. Insert the batteries into the tray inside the safe door. After installing, the keypad lights up briefly and the fingerprint sensor activates. The safe does not have a wired power option — it runs entirely on batteries. Battery life is approximately 6-12 months depending on how frequently you open the safe. Use quality alkaline batteries.

2

Set your master PIN code

On first use, the safe requires you to set a 4-8 digit master PIN. Press the # key on the keypad, enter the default factory code (printed on the instruction card or the back of the safe), then follow the prompts to create your new master PIN. Press # to confirm. Test the PIN by closing the safe and entering the code followed by # — the lock should disengage and the door opens. If you forget the PIN, you can use the physical backup key that comes with the safe.

3

Enroll fingerprints

The Wyze Gun Safe supports up to 20 fingerprint profiles. To enroll, enter your master PIN to open the safe. Press and hold the fingerprint sensor until it beeps. Place your finger on the sensor and lift — repeat 8-10 times at slightly different angles to build a complete fingerprint model. The safe beeps twice to confirm successful enrollment. Enroll multiple fingers (index and middle on both hands) in case your primary finger is wet or injured. Test each enrolled fingerprint by closing the safe and unlocking with a finger touch.

4

Connect to the Wyze app

Open the Wyze app, tap +, and select Gun Safe. The app pairs via Bluetooth — make sure Bluetooth is enabled and you are within 10 feet of the safe. The safe does not connect to WiFi — all communication is Bluetooth-only. Through the app you can view the access log (who opened the safe and when), manage fingerprints, change the PIN, and set auto-lock timing. The Bluetooth range is limited, so you need to be near the safe to use the app.

5

Mount the safe

Use the included mounting hardware to bolt the safe to a shelf, closet floor, or nightstand interior. The safe has pre-drilled holes on the bottom and back for mounting. Use the included bolts and a drill. Mount it with the keypad facing you for easy access. Make sure the door has room to open fully. Store the backup keys in a separate, secure location — not inside the safe. If the batteries die, you can use the backup key or the USB-C emergency power port on the bottom to provide temporary power while you enter the PIN.

Quick Solutions

Install fresh 4x AA batteries with correct polarity
Enroll each fingerprint several times from different angles
Set the master code first, then add users/prints
Keep the backup keys somewhere outside the safe
Pair over Bluetooth with it enabled
Test every unlock method before trusting the safe
Set auto-lock and re-lock behavior in the app
Replace batteries at the first low warning

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
