Problem Description

Your Wyze Lock Bolt has auto-lock enabled in the Wyze app with a set timer but the lock does not automatically lock after the door is closed and the timer expires. You find the door unlocked when you return home even though auto-lock was configured. Auto-lock failures occur when the lock cannot confirm the door is in the fully closed position because the door sensor is not calibrated, or when the auto-lock timer setting was not saved correctly to the lock firmware.

Symptoms

  • Door remains unlocked after the auto-lock timer period expires
  • Wyze app shows auto-lock enabled at 30 seconds but lock stays unlocked
  • Auto-lock worked before then stopped after a firmware update
  • Lock auto-locks sometimes but fails unpredictably on other occasions
  • App shows door closed but auto-lock does not trigger
  • Auto-lock only triggers when you manually toggle it in the app

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Auto-lock timer setting not synced to the lock after being saved in app
  • Lock door position sensor not calibrated to detect closed position
  • Door not fully latching giving the lock an ambiguous position signal
  • Auto-lock disabled after a firmware update resetting settings to default
  • Wyze app lost connection to lock when saving auto-lock setting
  • Lock battery below threshold preventing auto-lock motor activation

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not rely solely on auto-lock as your primary door security mechanism. Always verify the lock status in the Wyze app when leaving for extended periods. Auto-lock is a convenience feature not a guaranteed security measure.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Toggle Auto-Lock Off and Back On

Open the Wyze app and tap the Lock Bolt device then Settings then Auto-Lock. Turn the auto-lock toggle off and wait 5 seconds. Turn it back on and set your desired timer duration. Tap Save or Done to confirm. Toggling the setting forces the app to resend the auto-lock configuration to the lock firmware. Many auto-lock failures are caused by the initial setting not being received by the lock due to a brief Bluetooth disconnect during the save operation. After toggling test by unlocking the lock manually and waiting for the timer to expire.

2

Re-Calibrate the Lock Position Sensor

In the Wyze app go to the Lock Bolt device then Settings then Calibration. Follow the calibration wizard which asks you to open and close the door to teach the lock the open and closed door positions. The auto-lock feature requires the lock to detect that the door has returned to the closed position before starting the auto-lock timer. If the calibration is off the lock may not detect closure and the timer never starts. After re-calibration ensure the door latches fully when closed.

Extend the Auto-Lock Timer

If auto-lock is set to 30 seconds or less try extending it to 60 or 90 seconds. Very short auto-lock timers can race with the lock's Bluetooth polling interval. The lock checks its status and the auto-lock trigger at regular intervals and if the polling cycle does not catch the timer expiry within the 30-second window the auto-lock fires on the next polling cycle or misses entirely. Setting a 60-second timer ensures the lock reliably catches the timer expiry on its next status check.

4

Check Lock Battery Level

Open the Wyze app and check the lock battery indicator. Auto-lock requires the motor to engage with enough torque to turn the bolt. When the battery is below 30 percent the motor may not generate sufficient torque for a complete auto-lock turn and the lock makes a partial attempt or skips the auto-lock cycle entirely to preserve battery. Replace the batteries with fresh AA cells and confirm the battery indicator shows full before testing auto-lock.

Update Lock Firmware

In the Wyze app tap the Lock Bolt then Settings then Device Info then Firmware Version. Install any available firmware update. Wyze has released Lock Bolt firmware updates specifically addressing auto-lock reliability issues where the auto-lock timer was not persisted across Bluetooth reconnection events. After updating re-configure the auto-lock timer by toggling it off and on to ensure the updated firmware stores the setting correctly.

Quick Solutions

Toggle auto-lock off and back on in Wyze app to force resync
Re-calibrate the lock to ensure it recognises the fully closed door position
Check lock battery is above 50 percent for reliable auto-lock motor operation
Confirm the door fully latches without the auto-lock engaging first
Update Wyze Lock Bolt firmware which includes auto-lock reliability fixes
Set a longer auto-lock timer as short timers occasionally race with connection timeouts

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Enable the Wyze Lock Bolt leave and arrive notifications in the Wyze app. When you leave home the notification confirms whether the door locked behind you and if auto-lock failed you will see the door is still unlocked notification immediately while you are still close enough to return.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Auto-lock timer setting not synced to the lock
  • Lock door position sensor not calibrated to detect closed
  • Door not fully latching giving the lock an ambiguous
  • Auto-lock disabled after a firmware update resetting settings to
