Problem Description

You are setting up the Wyze Lock Gateway for remote access to your Wyze Lock. The Gateway is a small plug-in device that bridges your Wyze Lock's Bluetooth connection to WiFi, allowing you to lock/unlock remotely and receive notifications when you're away from home. Without the Gateway, the Wyze Lock only works via Bluetooth within about 30 feet.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

The Wyze Lock Gateway is what gives the original Wyze Lock remote access — it bridges the lock's Bluetooth to your WiFi. (Note it's only for the original Lock; the Lock Bolt is Bluetooth-only and has no Gateway.) Placement is the make-or-break: it has to be close enough to the lock for a solid Bluetooth link and in a spot with strong 2.4GHz WiFi.

Plug it in within about 30 feet of the door, up high and out in the open rather than behind furniture, on a 2.4GHz network. Once it's paired to both the lock and your WiFi, remote lock/unlock and notifications come alive.

Symptoms

  • Unsure how to set up the Gateway
  • Gateway will not connect to WiFi
  • Gateway not finding the lock
  • Remote control not working after setup
  • Gateway LED wrong color
  • App cannot add the Gateway
  • Gateway offline
  • Works up close but not remotely

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Gateway plugged in too far from the lock
  • Gateway on 5GHz (needs 2.4GHz)
  • Phone on 5GHz during setup
  • Gateway low or obstructed
  • Lock not paired to the Gateway
  • Weak WiFi where the Gateway is plugged in
  • Firmware update pending
  • Using it with a Lock Bolt (Gateway is for the original Lock only)

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always keep a physical backup key accessible outside your home in case of total lock failure. Never perform a factory reset while locked out as this may disable all electronic access. Ensure battery level is above 50 percent before firmware updates to prevent corruption.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

What the Wyze Lock Gateway does

The Wyze Lock Gateway is a small plug-in device that connects your Wyze Lock (original version, not the Lock Bolt) to your WiFi network. Without the gateway, the lock only works via Bluetooth — you have to be within 30 feet to control it. With the gateway, you get remote lock/unlock, status notifications, auto-lock, and auto-unlock from anywhere. The Lock Bolt does not need or use the gateway — it has Bluetooth only by design.

2

Plug in the gateway near the lock

Plug the Wyze Lock Gateway into a wall outlet within Bluetooth range of the lock — ideally within 20 feet with no major walls between them. The gateway acts as a Bluetooth-to-WiFi bridge. When plugged in, the LED blinks yellow (ready to pair). It needs to be close enough to maintain a reliable Bluetooth connection with the lock while also having WiFi coverage. An outlet in the same room as the lock or in an adjacent hallway usually works.

3

Pair the gateway in the Wyze app

Open the Wyze app, go to your Wyze Lock device, and tap Settings > Lock Gateway. Tap Set Up Gateway. The app discovers the gateway via Bluetooth. When prompted, enter your 2.4GHz WiFi network credentials — the gateway does not support 5GHz. The gateway connects to WiFi and pairs with the lock. The LED turns solid blue when fully connected. The lock status in the app now shows online instead of Bluetooth only.

4

Test remote access

After the gateway is set up, disconnect your phone from your home WiFi (use cellular data or connect to a different network). Open the Wyze app and check the lock status. You should see the current locked/unlocked state and be able to send lock or unlock commands remotely. If the lock shows offline, the gateway may have lost its Bluetooth connection to the lock — move the gateway closer. Check the gateway LED: solid blue is good, blinking yellow means it lost WiFi or Bluetooth.

5

Fix gateway connection issues

If the gateway keeps disconnecting, check the WiFi signal at the outlet where it is plugged in. Weak WiFi causes frequent drops. Try a closer outlet or add a WiFi extender. If the gateway LED stays solid blue but the lock shows offline in the app, the Bluetooth connection between gateway and lock is the issue — they may be too far apart or have too many walls between them. Move the gateway to a closer outlet. If the gateway LED blinks yellow constantly, unplug it for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and let it reconnect.

Quick Solutions

Plug the Gateway within about 30 feet of the lock
Connect it to a 2.4GHz network
Pair with the phone on 2.4GHz
Place it high and in the open, not behind furniture
Complete lock-to-Gateway pairing in the app
Choose an outlet with strong WiFi
Let firmware finish updating
Confirm you have the original Wyze Lock, not the Lock Bolt

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Set up auto-lock to engage 30 seconds after the door closes so you never accidentally leave it unlocked. Create temporary access codes for guests and service workers that automatically expire after a set time period.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.
