Problem Description

Your Wyze Lock motor jams with a grinding noise and the deadbolt will not extend fully, or the app shows a Motor Jammed or Jammed error. The Wyze Lock's motor is calibrated to the exact travel distance of your deadbolt — when that calibration is off or the deadbolt encounters physical resistance, the motor stalls and reports a jam.

Symptoms

  • Motor buzzes deadbolt won't move
  • App shows jammed error
  • Lock partially engages
  • Motor strained
  • Manual turn needs force
  • Worse in cold weather

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Door frame misalignment
  • Strike plate hole too small
  • Lock adapter misaligned
  • Low batteries
  • Door swelling humidity
  • Debris in channel

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not force jammed motor repeatedly. Overheats and burns out permanently.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Recalibrate the Lock Travel Distance

In the Wyze app tap your lock then Settings then Calibration. Follow the guided calibration process that walks the motor through the full lock and unlock travel range. This is the fix for the majority of jammed error reports — the motor's stored travel distance no longer matches the actual bolt position. After calibration, test lock and unlock 3 times to confirm the jam is cleared.

2

Replace Batteries with Lithium AA

Replace the current batteries immediately with Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries. Alkaline batteries experience significant voltage drop under load — when the motor draws peak current to drive the bolt, alkaline batteries may not sustain enough voltage to complete the full cycle, causing the motor to stall and report a jam. Lithium batteries maintain voltage under load and prevent motor stall jams from reoccurring.

Check Door and Deadbolt Alignment

Lock and unlock the deadbolt manually using your key or thumb turn. It should move with almost no resistance. If you feel friction or grinding, the deadbolt bolt is hitting the strike plate opening rather than passing through it cleanly. This happens after door settling or hinge wear. Loosen the strike plate screws, shift the plate position slightly, and retighten. File the strike plate opening if needed to create 1/8 inch clearance on each side of the bolt.

4

Enlarge the Strike Plate Opening

If the deadbolt binds even with the strike plate adjusted, the opening may be too tight for smooth motor-driven operation. Remove the strike plate and use a metal file to widen the opening by 1/8 inch on each side. The motor needs the bolt to pass through with zero contact. Reinstall the strike plate and test motor operation. A bolt that passes freely by hand but binds under motor load indicates the opening is at the minimum tolerance edge.

5

Lubricate the Deadbolt Mechanism

Apply a thin coating of dry graphite lubricant or Teflon-based lock lubricant to the deadbolt bolt and the strike plate opening. Do not use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants which attract dust and eventually increase friction. Dry lubricants reduce bolt-to-strike friction without attracting debris. After lubricating, cycle the lock manually 10 times to distribute the lubricant before testing motor operation.

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the keypad rejects valid codes, a lockout timer may be running — five failed entries locks most keypads silently for 5–10 minutes.

Pro Tip

Seasonal jamming means door swelling. Seal edges with polyurethane.

Real-World Insight

Most smart lock failures people label as hardware issues turn out to be a code wiped during a sync, or a setting reset nobody remembers triggering.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Door frame misalignment
  • Strike plate hole too small
  • Lock adapter misaligned
  • Low batteries
  • Door swelling humidity
