- Magnet too far from sensor
- Magnet installed on wrong side
- Sensor battery low affecting sensitivity
Problem Description
Your Ring Contact Sensor reports a door or window as open in the app even when the door is physically closed and latched. The Ring app shows an open alert or red status continuously. This false open reading is caused by the sensor magnet and sensor body being too far apart when the door is closed — the sensor gap is beyond the threshold needed to register a closed state.
Symptoms
- App shows door open when closed
- Cannot arm alarm due to open sensor
- Sensor worked before but now stuck open
- Magnet and sensor aligned but shows open
- Battery recently replaced
- Sensor fell off and was reattached
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Magnet too far from sensor
- Magnet installed on wrong side
- Sensor battery low affecting sensitivity
- Sensor needs recalibration
- Door warped creating gap
- Sensor or magnet shifted position
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not paint over the contact sensor. Paint can block the magnetic field and cause false open readings.

Step-by-Step Solution
Check Gap Distance
The magnet must be within half inch of the sensor. If door has warped or settled the gap may be too large. Move the magnet closer or add a spacer behind the sensor.
Check Magnet Side
The magnet has a marked side that must face the sensor. If installed backwards the magnetic field does not trigger the sensor correctly. Flip the magnet.
Replace Battery
Low battery causes erratic sensor readings. Replace with fresh CR2032 or CR123A depending on model. Wait 5 minutes after replacement for sensor to recalibrate.

$14.99Remove and Re-add
In Ring app remove the contact sensor from your device list. Factory reset the sensor by holding the button until LED flashes. Re-add as new device.
Test With Magnet
Hold the magnet directly against the sensor. App should show closed. Slowly move magnet away until it shows open. This tells you the maximum gap distance for your sensor.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.
Use the included spacers if mounting on a recessed door frame. The spacers ensure proper alignment between sensor and magnet. **Product Intelligence:** - CR2032 battery (3yr life) - Cold temps reduce battery - Weak signal = faster drain
Battery-related failures are almost always flagged too late — the device degrades silently for days before the app catches up to what's actually happening.
