- LED bulbs not dimmable rated
- Dimmer calibration not set for LED load
- Bulb wattage below dimmer minimum
Problem Description
Your Leviton Decora smart dimmer is not dimming lights smoothly. Lights may jump between brightness levels, only work at full brightness, or flicker when dimmed. The dimmer may also not reach true low brightness levels before the bulbs turn off completely.
Symptoms
- Lights jump from dim to bright with no middle range
- Dimmer only works as on/off with no dimming
- Lights flicker at low brightness settings
- Minimum dim level is still too bright
- Lights turn off before reaching lowest setting
- Dimming from app works differently than physical paddle
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- LED bulbs not dimmable rated
- Dimmer calibration not set for LED load
- Bulb wattage below dimmer minimum
- Mixed bulb types on same circuit
- Air gap switch accidentally engaged
- Dimmer set to wrong bulb type mode
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Do not use a dimmer switch with non-dimmable CFL bulbs as this creates a fire risk. Only use bulbs rated for dimmer use.
Step-by-Step Solution
Verify Bulbs Are Dimmable
Check the packaging or specifications of your LED bulbs. They must be explicitly rated as dimmable. Non-dimmable LEDs will flicker or only work at full brightness with a dimmer. Replace any non-dimmable bulbs with dimmable ones.
Check Air Gap Switch
Leviton dimmers have a small air gap tab on the side. If this tab is pulled out the switch is completely disconnected from power. Push it back in firmly until it clicks. This is a common oversight that makes the dimmer appear dead or only partially functional.
Calibrate the Dimmer
In the My Leviton app select the dimmer and go to settings. Find the calibration or trim settings. Adjust the low-end trim up until the lights stop flickering at low levels. Adjust the high-end trim down if lights are too bright at maximum. Save settings.
Set Correct Bulb Type
Some Leviton dimmers have a bulb type selector in the app. Check if the dimmer is set to LED/CFL mode versus incandescent mode. Using the wrong mode causes poor dimming performance. Switch to the correct mode for your bulbs.
Test with Single Bulb
Remove all but one dimmable LED bulb from the circuit. Test the full dimming range. If it works smoothly add bulbs back one at a time. If a specific bulb causes flickering when added it may be defective or a different model than the others.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If flickering only happens on dimming, the issue is almost always the dimmer's minimum-load setting, not the bulb — it's drawing less current than the dimmer expects.
Set a gentle fade-on and fade-off rate in the Leviton app for a more premium dimming experience that is also easier on LED bulbs.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
