- Robot started on a slope or uneven surface
- One wheel or edge resting higher than the rest
- Robot placed half-on a thick rug or threshold
Problem Description
Roomba announced Error 16 and asks you to move it to a flat surface. The robot's tilt sensor thinks it isn't sitting level, or its front bumper is dislodged, so it won't start. Starting on a rug edge, a threshold, or a slope is the usual trigger.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Error 16 is Roomba's startup tilt check refusing to run because the robot doesn't think it's sitting flat - or because the front bumper has come loose. It's extremely common to see it when the robot is started half-on a thick rug, on a threshold strip between rooms, or right after you pick it up to empty it and set it back down at an angle.
The fix is almost always positional: move the robot to a flat, level patch of hard floor, clear anything wedged under one side, and press CLEAN. If the bumper looks crooked, snap it back onto its clips. Only if Error 16 keeps firing on genuinely level ground with a seated bumper is the tilt sensor itself suspect - then update the software and contact iRobot.
Symptoms
- Roomba announces Error 16
- Robot says to move to a flat surface
- Error 16 the moment a clean is started
- Robot won't leave the dock
- Bumper looks crooked or hangs off
- Error 16 after the robot was picked up
- Robot started on a rug edge or threshold
- Error 16 right after emptying and replacing the robot
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Robot started on a slope or uneven surface
- One wheel or edge resting higher than the rest
- Robot placed half-on a thick rug or threshold
- The front bumper is dislodged from its clips
- Robot started while being held or tilted
- Home Base sitting on uneven flooring
- An object propping up one side of the robot
- The tilt sensor confused by a wobbly start position
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
If Error 16 persists on a flat, level surface with the bumper properly seated, the internal tilt sensor may be failing. Contact iRobot rather than repeatedly restarting.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Understand the Error
Error 16 means Roomba's internal tilt sensor thinks the robot isn't sitting flat, or its front bumper is dislodged. iRobot's prompt is to move it to a flat surface then press CLEAN - it's a startup safety check that runs before the robot will drive.
Move to Level Hard Floor
Pick the robot up and set it on a flat, level, hard-floor spot - not a rug edge, a threshold strip between rooms, a sloped floor, or the lip of the dock. Press CLEAN and see if it starts cleanly.
Clear Anything Under the Robot
Feel underneath the robot. A charging cord, a toy, or a bunched-up rug under one side tilts it just enough to trip Error 16. Remove the obstruction and set the robot down evenly on all wheels.
Check the Bumper
Error 16 also fires when the front bumper (the wide movable band across the front) has popped off its clips. If the bumper looks crooked or hangs off the front, line it up and press firmly until each clip snaps back into place.
Still stuck? Ask Trunetto about this exact issue.
Set It Down Fully
Don't press CLEAN while still holding or tilting the robot. Place it flat on the floor, let it settle for a second so the tilt sensor reads level, then start the clean.
Level the Home Base
If Error 16 happens as the robot tries to leave the dock, the Home Base may be on uneven flooring or a transition strip. Move the dock to a flat, hard-floor area against a wall so the robot launches level.
Reboot the Robot
If moving it doesn't help, reboot: hold the CLEAN button about 20 seconds until the light ring swirls, then release. This re-runs the startup tilt calibration and clears a stuck reading.
When It's a Real Fault
If Error 16 fires while the robot clearly sits flat and level with a properly seated bumper, the internal tilt sensor may be faulty. Update the app software first, and if it continues, contact iRobot support.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

List Your BusinessStarting Roomba half-on a rug or a threshold strip is the usual trigger for Error 16 - always launch it from flat hard floor.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Robot started on a slope or uneven surface
- One wheel or edge resting higher than the rest
- Robot placed half-on a thick rug or threshold
- The front bumper is dislodged from its clips
- Robot started while being held or tilted
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
