Problem Description

Your Wyze Cam is not detecting people even though motion detection works fine. Person detection requires an active Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite subscription. Without a subscription, the camera records motion events but cannot identify whether the motion is a person, pet, or vehicle. This guide covers subscription verification and person detection settings.

Why This Happens in Real Homes

Person detection isn't a hardware feature — it's an AI service that runs on Wyze's servers, so it only works with an active Cam Plus (or the free Cam Plus Lite) plan assigned to that camera. The most common reason people see only "Motion" tags is that no plan is attached, the trial lapsed, or the Person Detection toggle is simply off.

Confirm the subscription is active and applied to the right camera, then enable Person Detection under the camera's event settings and update its firmware. Framing matters too — a person has to appear large enough for the AI to classify, so a camera aimed at a distant driveway may catch motion but never tag a person.

Symptoms

  • Motion detected but no Person tag
  • Person detection alerts missing
  • Events labeled Motion not Person
  • Person detection greyed out
  • No AI tags on clips
  • Person alerts stopped working
  • Cam Plus features unavailable
  • Detection works only for motion

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • No active Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite subscription
  • Person Detection toggle turned off
  • AI events not enabled for the camera
  • Detection zone excludes where people appear
  • Camera firmware out of date
  • Free trial expired
  • Person too far or too small in frame
  • Plan not synced to the correct camera

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Verify your Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite subscription

Person detection on Wyze cameras requires Cam Plus (paid) or Cam Plus Lite (free with donation). Without a plan, the camera only sends generic motion alerts. In the Wyze app, go to Account, then Services, and verify the camera has an active Cam Plus license assigned. If using Cam Plus Lite, check that the camera is enrolled — it is not automatic for all cameras.

2

Check that person detection is enabled in settings

In the Wyze app, select the camera, go to Settings, then Event Recording, then Detection Settings. Toggle on Person detection specifically. You can also enable vehicle, pet, and package detection if you have Cam Plus. If person detection is toggled off, the camera still records on motion but does not classify what caused it.

3

Make sure the camera has a clear view

Person detection uses AI analysis of the video frame. If the camera is too far from the subject, the person appears too small in the frame for the AI to identify them. Wyze recommends subjects be within 25 feet and occupy at least a meaningful portion of the frame. A camera mounted 30 feet high looking down on a distant driveway may not reliably identify people because they appear as small blobs.

4

Check lighting conditions

Person detection accuracy drops significantly in low light. In night vision mode (IR black-and-white), the AI has less detail to work with. If person detection works during the day but fails at night, try enabling the camera spotlight for color night vision, which gives the AI more image detail. In complete darkness, even IR may not provide enough contrast for reliable person detection.

5

Reduce false positive confusion

If person detection triggers on non-person objects (flags, mannequins, pet standing on hind legs), the AI is misinterpreting the shape. There is no way to train the detection per-camera. Use activity zones to exclude areas where false detections occur. If the camera faces a street where car headlights create person-shaped shadows, exclude that area from the detection zone.

Quick Solutions

Confirm an active Cam Plus (or Cam Plus Lite) plan
Enable Person Detection in Event Recording settings
Turn on AI/smart detection for the camera
Adjust the detection zone to cover walkways
Update the camera firmware
Re-log in to sync the subscription
Mount so people appear large enough to classify
Reassign the plan to the correct camera

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.

Pro Tip

Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • No active Cam Plus or Cam Plus Lite subscription
  • Person Detection toggle turned off
  • AI events not enabled for the camera
  • Detection zone excludes where people appear
  • Camera firmware out of date
