- Card not seated fully in the slot
- Card not formatted in FAT32 by the camera
- Card larger than the supported 256GB
Problem Description
Your Wyze Cam is not detecting the microSD card you inserted. Remove and reinsert the microSD card — the card slot is on the bottom of Wyze Cam v3 and on the side of Wyze Cam Pan. Push the card until it clicks into place. The card must be formatted as FAT32 (cards over 32GB need to be formatted in the Wyze app). This guide covers card insertion, formatting, and compatible card sizes.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Wyze cams are picky about microSD cards, so "not detected" usually comes down to the card, not the camera. The two big ones: it must be formatted FAT32 (which the camera can do in the app) and it must be within the supported size — cards over 256GB, or cheap counterfeit high-capacity cards, often won't mount at all.
Start by reinserting the card firmly (it clicks in), then format it to FAT32 from the app. If it still won't take, try a genuine 32-256GB high-endurance Class 10 card — 24/7 recording wears out ordinary cards, and a worn or corrupted card is a frequent cause of a camera that loses storage after working for a while.
Symptoms
- Camera will not detect the microSD card
- Card shows as unavailable
- No local recording to the card
- Card storage not showing in the app
- Playback timeline empty
- Card detected then drops out
- Format option greyed out
- Recording stops after a while
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Card not seated fully in the slot
- Card not formatted in FAT32 by the camera
- Card larger than the supported 256GB
- Slow or counterfeit/low-quality card
- Corrupted card filesystem
- Contacts dirty or card worn out
- Card inserted while the camera was powered
- Firmware out of date
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Solution
Remove and reinsert the microSD card
Power off the camera (unplug it). Remove the microSD card, check for visible damage or dirt on the contacts, and reinsert it firmly until it clicks. Plug the camera back in. In the Wyze app, go to camera settings, then Local Storage — the card should appear with its capacity shown. If it still does not detect, try a different card to determine if the issue is the card or the camera slot.

$9.99Format the card in the camera
If the card appears but shows errors or zero capacity, format it through the Wyze app. Go to camera settings, Local Storage, and tap Format. This erases everything on the card and creates a filesystem the camera can use. Do not format the card on a computer — Wyze cameras expect a specific FAT32 format. Cards formatted on Mac or PC sometimes use different block sizes that the camera rejects.
Check the card type and size
Wyze cameras support microSD cards up to 256GB in FAT32 format. Cards larger than 256GB may not work. Some cameras also have issues with UHS-II cards — use UHS-I or Class 10 cards. Ultra-cheap or counterfeit cards (common on Amazon marketplace sellers) may have fake capacity and fail immediately. Buy from reputable brands — Samsung EVO, SanDisk Ultra, or Kingston Canvas.
Check for a failing card slot
If multiple known-good cards are not detected, the camera microSD slot may be damaged. Examine the slot with a flashlight for bent pins or debris. The microSD slot is a fragile component — inserting cards at an angle or forcing them can bend the internal pins. If the slot is damaged, the camera cannot be repaired easily. The camera still works for cloud recording without the card.
Use a high-endurance card for continuous recording
If the card was previously working but stopped, it may have worn out from continuous write cycles. Standard microSD cards are designed for occasional use (photos, phone storage), not 24/7 video recording. High-endurance cards (Samsung High Endurance, SanDisk High Endurance, SanDisk MAX Endurance) are rated for tens of thousands of hours of continuous recording and last 3-5x longer in cameras.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If the sensor still misses events after repositioning, check whether a scheduled 'home' or 'away' mode is overriding the sensitivity setting silently.
Set up activity zones to monitor only the areas that matter like your front porch and driveway and exclude the street. This dramatically reduces false alerts while ensuring you never miss an actual event at your property.
This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
