Problem Description

Your Wyze camera shows Error Code 42 which means the device is offline and cannot be reached by the Wyze app or servers. Unlike error 06 which is a streaming timeout, error 42 means the camera has completely lost its connection to the Wyze cloud. The camera is either powered off, disconnected from WiFi, or unable to reach Wyze servers. This is the second most common Wyze error and is a complete connectivity failure not just a streaming issue.

Symptoms

  • Wyze app shows Error Code 42 device offline
  • Camera status light is off or showing solid red instead of blue
  • Camera does not appear in the Wyze app device list or shows grayed out
  • All camera functions are unavailable including live view and playback
  • Error 42 appeared after a WiFi change, power outage, or firmware update
  • Camera was working then went to error 42 with no user changes

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Camera lost power due to unplugged cable, power outage, or faulty adapter
  • WiFi network changed password or SSID and camera has old credentials
  • Camera firmware crashed and device is stuck in a non-functional state
  • WiFi router not providing 2.4GHz network that camera requires
  • Camera IP address changed and DNS cache has stale entry
  • Camera hardware failure in WiFi module or power circuit

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

If error 42 appears on multiple Wyze devices simultaneously the issue is likely your WiFi network or a Wyze server outage not the individual cameras. Check your router first and verify internet connectivity before troubleshooting individual cameras.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Camera Power

Look at the camera status light. Solid blue means online and connected. Solid red means powered on but not connected to WiFi. Flashing yellow means in setup mode. No light means no power. If no light check that the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends and the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet. Try a different USB cable and power adapter. Wyze cameras are sensitive to underpowered adapters and need at least 5V 1A.

Power Cycle the Camera

Unplug the camera power cable. Wait 15 seconds. Plug it back in. Watch the status light. It should turn solid red first then flash blue while connecting to WiFi then turn solid blue when connected. If it stays solid red the camera cannot connect to your WiFi network. If it does not light up at all the power supply or camera hardware may be faulty.

Reconnect to WiFi If Credentials Changed

If your WiFi password or network name changed you need to re-add the camera. In the Wyze app tap the plus icon then Add Device then select your camera type. Hold the setup button on the bottom of the camera for 20 seconds until you hear Ready to Connect. Follow the app prompts to connect to your new WiFi network. The camera will retain its name and settings after reconnecting.

4

Factory Reset the Camera

If power cycling does not resolve error 42 perform a factory reset. With the camera plugged in press and hold the setup button on the bottom for 20 seconds. You will hear Ready to Connect confirming the reset. The camera is now in factory default state. Set it up as a new device through the Wyze app. Note that factory reset removes all local settings but your cloud clips are preserved in your Wyze account.

5

Flash Firmware Via SD Card

If the camera does not respond to button presses at all it may have a corrupted firmware. Download the correct firmware file from wyze.com/support for your exact camera model. Rename the file to demo.bin and place it on a FAT32 formatted microSD card. Insert the SD card into the powered-off camera. Hold the setup button while plugging in power. Continue holding for 3 to 6 seconds then release. The camera will flash purple or yellow while installing firmware. Wait 4 minutes then try connecting through the app.

Quick Solutions

Verify camera has power by checking status light
Power cycle camera by unplugging for 10 seconds
Reconnect camera to WiFi if network credentials changed
Flash firmware manually via SD card if camera is bricked
Factory reset camera if power cycle does not restore connectivity
Replace USB power cable or adapter if camera keeps losing power

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

Wyze Cam Outdoor v2 uses a base station for WiFi connectivity. If you get error 42 on a Cam Outdoor check the base station first. Power cycle the base station by unplugging for 15 seconds. The camera connects to the base station wirelessly not directly to your router.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.
