Problem Description

Your Leviton smart switch will not connect to WiFi during initial setup. The My Leviton app cannot find the switch, the connection attempt times out, or the switch LED blinks continuously without completing setup. Leviton smart switches only connect to 2.4GHz WiFi and will silently fail during setup if your phone is on a 5GHz band — this is the most common cause of failed setup attempts.

Symptoms

  • App cannot find switch
  • Connection timeout during setup
  • LED blinking but no connection
  • Setup starts then fails
  • Switch not appearing in app
  • Worked before but now offline

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Router on 5GHz only
  • WiFi password has special characters
  • Router blocking new devices
  • Switch too far from router
  • Incorrect WiFi credentials
  • MAC filtering enabled

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not reset the switch repeatedly. Allow 60 seconds between reset attempts for the radio to stabilize.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Connect to a Dedicated 2.4GHz Network

Leviton smart switches only support 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router broadcasts a combined network where 2.4GHz and 5GHz share the same SSID, your phone may be on 5GHz during setup, causing the handoff to the switch to fail. Log into your router and create a separate 2.4GHz SSID, or temporarily disable 5GHz entirely during setup. Once the switch is connected and confirmed in the app, you can re-enable 5GHz.

2

Check WiFi Password for Special Characters

Leviton switches and many IoT devices cannot parse WiFi passwords that contain special characters such as quotes, apostrophes, backslashes, or @ symbols. If your password contains any of these, temporarily change your WiFi password to one using only letters and numbers, complete the switch setup, then restore the original password. This is a silent failure — no error message indicates the password is the cause.

3

Factory Reset the Switch

Hold the top paddle of the Leviton switch for 15 or more seconds until the LED indicator flashes rapidly. This clears stored credentials and partial connection state. Immediately launch the My Leviton app after the reset and begin the add device flow — the switch has a limited pairing window before it times out of discovery mode.

4

Disable MAC Address Filtering on Your Router

If your router has MAC address filtering enabled, it silently blocks new devices from connecting with no visible error on either side. Log into your router admin panel and temporarily disable MAC filtering, or add the switch's MAC address — printed on the device label — to the allowed list before attempting setup again.

5

Position the Switch Close to the Router for Setup

The initial WiFi handshake is more sensitive to signal strength than normal operation. If the switch is in a room far from the router, run the setup while standing at a temporary location within 10 feet of the router to ensure signal strength is not causing timeout failures. After successful setup the switch will operate normally at its installed distance.

Quick Solutions

Use 2.4GHz network
Simplify WiFi password temporarily
Disable MAC filtering
Move router closer during setup
Factory reset switch
Disable AP isolation

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

This usually happens right after a router reboot or ISP change — the device rejoins the network but drops its cloud session silently.

Pro Tip

After successful setup you can move the router back. Once connected the switch maintains connection at greater distances.

Real-World Insight

Most WiFi drop-offs happen right after a router reboot or ISP swap — the device reconnects to the network but silently loses its cloud registration.

What Usually Goes Wrong
  • Router on 5GHz only
  • WiFi password has special characters
  • Router blocking new devices
  • Switch too far from router
  • Incorrect WiFi credentials
