- Ethernet cable not seated in router and base
- Router not providing an IP (DHCP) to the base
- Phone on 5GHz during app setup
Problem Description
You are setting up the Wyze Cam Outdoor base station for the first time. Connect the base station to your router using the included Ethernet cable — plug one end into the Ethernet port on the back of the base station and the other into an open port on your router. Power the base station via the USB adapter. This guide covers base station setup and pairing cameras to it.
Why This Happens in Real Homes
Setting up the WCO base station is a two-part job: get the base online with your router first, then sync the cameras to it. Most setup failures are at part one — the Ethernet isn't fully seated, the router isn't handing the base an IP, or the phone is on 5GHz while running the app.
Cable the base to the router, power it, and wait for a solid LED before adding cameras with your phone on 2.4GHz. Sync each camera right next to the base, then place it in its outdoor spot — starting close and moving out is how you find the range the base can actually hold.
Symptoms
- Base station will not complete setup
- App cannot find the base station
- Base station LED will not go solid
- Cameras will not sync to the base
- Setup stalls at connecting
- Ethernet not recognized
- Firmware update hangs
- Base offline right after setup
Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.
Common Causes
- Ethernet cable not seated in router and base
- Router not providing an IP (DHCP) to the base
- Phone on 5GHz during app setup
- Base station firmware out of date
- Camera not put into sync mode
- Base placed far from where cameras will live
- Power adapter not fully connected
- Router AP isolation blocking the base
Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.
Security cameras should be installed at least 8 feet high to prevent tampering. Check local laws regarding recording audio and video. Never aim cameras at neighboring private property. Outdoor cameras should be rated IP65 or higher for weather resistance.
Tools & Requirements
Step-by-Step Solution
Connect the base station to your router
Plug the Ethernet cable from the base station into an available port on your router. Connect the power adapter to the base station. The status LED cycles through colors during boot and settles on solid blue when connected and online. If the LED stays amber or blinks red, the Ethernet connection or internet is not working — try a different router port and check that your internet is active.
Add the base station in the Wyze app
Open the Wyze app, tap + to add a device, and select Wyze Base Station. Follow the in-app instructions. Press the sync button on the back of the Wyze Base Station (near the Ethernet port) when prompted. The app discovers the base station on your local network and registers it to your Wyze account. Name it something descriptive like Front Yard Base or Backyard Hub.
Insert a microSD card for local backup
Open the base station cover and insert a microSD card (up to 128GB supported). This stores a local copy of all motion events from connected cameras. In the Wyze app, go to the base station settings and enable local recording. A 32GB card holds about a week of event clips. A 128GB card holds several weeks. The base station overwrites the oldest footage when full.
Pair your Wyze Cam Outdoor cameras
With the base station online, add cameras one at a time. Press the sync button on the base station until you hear a tone. Then press the sync button on the camera. The pairing takes 15-30 seconds. After pairing, the camera appears in the Wyze app under the base station. Repeat for each additional camera (up to 4 per base station).
Check connectivity between base station and cameras
After pairing, check the signal strength indicator for each camera in the Wyze app. If a camera shows weak signal (1 bar), it is too far from the base station or there are too many walls between them. Options: move the base station to a more central location, move the camera closer, or purchase an additional base station for cameras on the opposite side of the property.
Quick Solutions
Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.
If this comes back after following these steps, check whether a recent app or firmware update reset a default setting — the fix works, but the setting gets reverted silently.

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
- Ethernet cable not seated in router and base
- Router not providing an IP (DHCP) to the base
- Phone on 5GHz during app setup
- Base station firmware out of date
- Camera not put into sync mode
Before you go — try one of these (they fix most cases).
