Problem Description

Your lights flicker, buzz, or hum when controlled by a Lutron Caseta dimmer switch. The flickering may occur at certain dim levels, particularly at the low end, or the lights may audibly buzz when dimmed below 50 percent. Some LED bulbs may also flash when the switch is turned off.

Symptoms

  • LED lights flicker visibly when dimmed below 50 percent
  • Audible buzzing or humming from the light bulbs when dimmed
  • Lights flash once when the dimmer is turned off
  • Flickering only happens at certain specific dim levels
  • Some bulbs in a multi-bulb fixture flicker while others do not
  • Dimmer switch itself makes a faint buzzing sound

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • LED bulbs not compatible with Lutron Caseta dimmer technology
  • Dimmer low-end trim set too low for the installed bulbs
  • Total LED wattage too low for the dimmer minimum load
  • Mixing different LED bulb brands or types on the same dimmer
  • Loose wire connections in the switch box
  • Neutral wire issue in older home wiring without neutral

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Always turn off the circuit breaker before touching any wiring. Even when a dimmer switch is in the off position, the wires in the box are still energized and can deliver a dangerous electrical shock.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Check Bulb Compatibility

Not all dimmable LED bulbs work well with Lutron Caseta dimmers. Visit the Lutron LED compatibility tool on their website and search for your specific bulb brand and model. If your bulbs are not on the compatible list, replace them with certified compatible bulbs. Lutron maintains the most extensive LED compatibility database in the industry. Cree, Philips, and Feit Electric LED bulbs generally have the best compatibility with Caseta dimmers.

2

Adjust the Low-End Trim

The low-end trim sets the minimum dim level for the connected bulbs. If set too low, LEDs will flicker. On the Caseta dimmer, tap the bottom button repeatedly to dim the lights to their lowest level where flickering begins. Then press and hold the bottom button for about 6 seconds until the LED indicator on the dimmer blinks. Use the raise button to increase the low-end trim until the flickering stops. Press the center button to save the setting.

3

Address Minimum Load Requirements

Caseta dimmers have a minimum electrical load requirement, typically around 25 watts. A single 8-watt LED bulb may be below this minimum, causing flickering. Solutions include adding more bulbs to the circuit, using higher-wattage LED bulbs, or installing a Lutron LUT-MLC minimum load capacitor. The capacitor is a small device wired at any fixture on the circuit that adds enough load to stabilize the dimmer without consuming significant energy.

4

Ensure Consistent Bulbs

Mixing different LED bulb brands, models, or wattages on a single dimmer circuit can cause some bulbs to flicker while others remain stable. Each LED driver responds differently to the dimming signal. Replace all bulbs on the circuit with the same brand, model, and wattage for consistent dimming performance. Even different production batches of the same bulb can occasionally cause issues, so buy a multi-pack from the same lot.

5

Check Wiring Connections

Turn off the circuit breaker for the switch. Remove the dimmer faceplate and pull the dimmer out from the box. Check all wire connections for loose wire nuts or backstab connections that may have come loose. Tighten all connections. If the wiring uses backstab connections where wires push into holes in the back of the switch, these are unreliable and should be converted to screw terminal or wire nut connections. Reinstall the dimmer and restore power.

Quick Solutions

Replace bulbs with Lutron-certified dimmable LED bulbs
Adjust the low-end trim on the dimmer switch
Add more bulbs or a Lutron LUT-MLC minimum load capacitor
Use identical bulb brand and model on each dimmer circuit
Tighten all wire connections in the switch box
Set high-end trim to prevent dimming to problematic levels

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If flickering only happens on dimming, the issue is almost always the dimmer's minimum-load setting, not the bulb — it's drawing less current than the dimmer expects.

Pro Tip

When shopping for LED bulbs for Lutron dimmers, look for bulbs specifically labeled as compatible with leading dimmers or smooth dimming. These typically have higher quality LED drivers that handle dimming signals cleanly. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Caseta Smart Bridge - Clear Connect RF (not WiFi) - HomeKit/Alexa/Google compatible

Real-World Insight

LED flicker with smart dimmers is the #1 unfixed complaint — most people swap the bulb when the dimmer's low-end trim is the actual problem.
