Why Do My Lutron Caseta Dimmable Lights Flicker or Buzz When Dimmed

Problem Description

Your lights flicker, buzz, or hum when controlled by a Lutron Caseta dimmer switch. The flickering may occur at certain dim levels, particularly at the low end, or the lights may audibly buzz when dimmed below 50 percent. Some LED bulbs may also flash when the switch is turned off.

Check Bulb Compatibility

Adjust the Low-End Trim

The low-end trim sets the minimum dim level for the connected bulbs. If set too low, LEDs will flicker. On the Caseta dimmer, tap the bottom button repeatedly to dim the lights to their lowest level where flickering begins. Then press and hold the bottom button for about 6 seconds until the LED indicator on the dimmer blinks. Use the raise button to increase the low-end trim until the flickering stops. Press the center button to save the setting.

Address Minimum Load Requirements

Caseta dimmers have a minimum electrical load requirement, typically around 25 watts. A single 8-watt LED bulb may be below this minimum, causing flickering. Solutions include adding more bulbs to the circuit, using higher-wattage LED bulbs, or installing a Lutron LUT-MLC minimum load capacitor. The capacitor is a small device wired at any fixture on the circuit that adds enough load to stabilize the dimmer without consuming significant energy.

Ensure Consistent Bulbs

Mixing different LED bulb brands, models, or wattages on a single dimmer circuit can cause some bulbs to flicker while others remain stable. Each LED driver responds differently to the dimming signal. Replace all bulbs on the circuit with the same brand, model, and wattage for consistent dimming performance. Even different production batches of the same bulb can occasionally cause issues, so buy a multi-pack from the same lot.

Check Wiring Connections

Turn off the circuit breaker for the switch. Remove the dimmer faceplate and pull the dimmer out from the box. Check all wire connections for loose wire nuts or backstab connections that may have come loose. Tighten all connections. If the wiring uses backstab connections where wires push into holes in the back of the switch, these are unreliable and should be converted to screw terminal or wire nut connections. Reinstall the dimmer and restore power.
