Problem Description

Your Lutron Caseta switch works from the physical buttons but does not respond to the Lutron app Alexa or Google Home commands. The switch shows as offline or unresponsive in the app. Lutron Caseta uses its own wireless protocol called Clear Connect not WiFi so the issue is between the switch and the Lutron Smart Bridge not your WiFi network.

Symptoms

  • Switch works from wall buttons but not app
  • Lutron app shows switch offline
  • Alexa says device not responding for Caseta
  • Google Home cannot reach Lutron switch
  • Switch delays 10 plus seconds before responding to app
  • Pico remote works but app does not

Recognize these? Here's what usually causes it.

Common Causes

  • Lutron Smart Bridge disconnected from network
  • Bridge firmware needs update
  • Bridge too far from switch exceeding range
  • Router changed IP address for bridge
  • Alexa or Google skill disconnected from Lutron
  • Bridge crashed needing restart

Most fixes happen in the first 3 steps.

Warning

Do not factory reset the bridge unless absolutely necessary. Factory reset removes all switch pairings and Pico remote assignments requiring you to re-pair every device in your home.

Step-by-Step Solution

1

Restart the Bridge

Unplug the Lutron Smart Bridge from power for 15 seconds then plug back in. Wait 60 seconds for it to fully boot. The LED should be solid green when ready. A bridge restart fixes most app connectivity issues caused by memory leaks or crashed processes.

2

Check Network Connection

The bridge connects via ethernet cable to your router. Check that the ethernet cable is firmly plugged in at both ends. Check for bent pins. Try a different ethernet port on your router. If the bridge LED is flashing instead of solid the network connection is down.

Re-Link Voice Assistants

If Alexa or Google stopped controlling Caseta the account link may have expired. In the Alexa app go to Skills then Lutron Caseta and disable then re-enable the skill. Sign in to your Lutron account again. For Google Home re-link in Works With Google settings.

4

Check Bridge Range

Lutron Clear Connect has a 30-foot range through walls. If the bridge is in the basement and the switch is on the second floor it may be out of range. Move the bridge to a central location. Lutron also sells range extenders for large homes.

5

Assign Static IP

In your router settings find the Lutron Bridge by its MAC address and assign it a static IP. DHCP changes can cause the app to lose connection to the bridge. A static IP ensures the app always finds the bridge at the same address.

Quick Solutions

Restart the Lutron Smart Bridge
Check bridge ethernet connection
Re-link Alexa or Google skill
Move bridge closer to switches
Update bridge firmware
Assign static IP to bridge

Still having issues? This is usually the deeper cause below.

If voice commands stopped working after relinking the account, check that the skill or action is still enabled — relinking sometimes disables it silently.

Pro Tip

The Lutron Bridge LED color tells you its status. Solid green means connected. Flashing green means booting. Solid red means no internet. Flashing red means no local network. **Product Intelligence:** - Requires Caseta Smart Bridge - Clear Connect RF (not WiFi) - HomeKit/Alexa/Google compatible

Real-World Insight

This issue almost always looks more complex than it is — the majority of cases trace back to a single setting, a stale credential, or a default that shipped wrong.
